19 fragments (total mass 624g) of middle Roman greyware pottery. The fragments are of various sizes, thicknesses, and fabric qualities, relating to a number of vessels. Of particular interest are a fragment from the base of a vessel ( 5.6 x 71.1 x 104.5mm, mass 89g), and a very large fragment from a vessel foot or lid (125.4 x 133.5 x 47.0mm, mass 222g). A fragment of early Roman pottery (samian ware). The sherd measures 47.7 x 34.0 x 5.5mm, and weighs 7.0g. The sherd bears no evidence of relief decoration, but probably came from a bowl or similar vessel. Samian ware dates primarily to the 1st century AD, and was imported from the continent (Gaul in particular). It was a desirable fineware for use at table.

An annular lead weight, with a diameter of 29.7mm, a maximum thickness of 9.0mm, and a mass of 30g. The central perforation has a diameter of 10.8mm. It is unornamented, with a pale grey-white surface colour, and one face is poorly preserved. Such weights are difficult to date, and their precise function is uncertain, though they may have been used in fishing or weaving. This undecorated example may date to any time between the Roman and early postmedieval periods.

A fragment from a Romano-British cast copper alloy knee brooch, dating to the 3rd or 4th centuries. The brooch has a fan-shaped spring casing, and though the bow seems unornamented, there is evidence that white metal was soldered onto by way of ornament. The fragment thus has a patchy green patina, with areas of silvery lustre. The foot and catchplate are not extant. The fragment measures 17.7mm in length, 10.1mm in width, and 2.1mm in maximum thickness. It weighs 1.8g.

A Romano-British cast copper alloy Colchester variant (double-pierced lug) brooch, dating to the first century AD. Moulded reeding is evident on the gently curved bow, and the wings form an open cylindrical housing for the spring, which has four turns and an external chord. The wings are decorated with groups of vertical (ie circumferential) lines. The double-pierced lug is situated behind the head, as is characteristic of this type. The upper hole retains the chord of the spring, the lower one secured an axis bar. The brooch fragment measures 24.9mm in length from end to end, …

A fragment from a Romano-British cast copper alloy plate brooch, dating to the 2nd century AD. A pair of knurled transverse ribs divide the surface into two raised triangular fields, presumably originally coloured with enamel. The plate is thin, and the reverse bears no signs of a lug or pin attachment, so this piece may well have been soldered onto the front of a more substantial backplate. This is a common 2nd century form, and there are close parallels in Crummy 1983: p16, no. 78, and on the database (a good local example comes from Preston Deanery, near Quinton, NARC-79EF24). …

A rectangular sherd of samian ware from a Roman ceramic table vessel. It is decorated with a 'hare' motif, within a circular double-beaded panel. Samian is a relatively common fineware dating to the first century AD, easily identifiable by its red slip.
