At the front it has a crown over initial letters in copperplate style: N L V (Newport Loyal Volunteers). This button is reddish brown and traces of gilding can be seen at the front. A complete post-Medieval copper-alloy closed one-piece thimble (c. 1650-c. 1750). This thimble has straight tapering sides, a rounded top and a slightly thickened rim. The sides and top are covered in regularly-spaced sub-circular pits. The rim is plain and has a small dent. The inside is smooth. The thimble is drab green with traces of a dark green patina. The corner has a pair of conjoined ear-like features flanked by circular openings. Traces of a white metal coating can be seen in the crevices at the front. The top part is rectangular and rounded in side view. Below this part a similar indentation on both edges is filled with a small deposit of iron. The lower portion, with two steps at each edge, narrows in width towards a worn break. Height: 16.6mm; width: 11.8mm; thickness: 6.8mm. Weight: 5.78g. It is possible that the object is a spacer and that the indentations were pierced to accommodate wire.

An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy mount (c. 1500-c. 1700). This mount is broadly heart-shaped with a fleur-de-lis at one end and a rounded knop at the other. Raised decoration at the front consists of addorsed scrolls adjacent to a lozenge. Pellets form a border. The rear face is slightly concave and there is the remains of a spike at each end.
