Post-medieval lead musket balls complete with casting sprue probably dating to c. 1600-c. 1800. The regularity of these balls may suggest their industrial manufacture at an arsenal. The diameter is 14mm and the combined weight 55.55g. The weight suggests that they could have been used in a pistol (Harding 2012). Harding, D.F., 2012. A lead hem weight of post-medieval date. It is a flat discoid weight and has two circular stitching holes. It is lightly patinated all over. Despite looking like a button, these weights were, and are used to weigh down the hems of curtains, and perhaps also skirts. Examples can be seen on page 83 of Bailey's (2004) Buttons and Fasteners. They seem to come into use perhaps in the eighteenth century. It is similar to other examples recorded on the database, for example PUBLIC-34A5D8 and NLM-26CC70. The size of this example suggests it was for weighing down the hem of a curtain rather th…

Circular lead-alloy button with two circular perforations and traces of decoration on at least one face. This was originally recorded as a fabric weight, but it has a circular recess (or boss) visible on both faces and is too small and light to function well as a weight for either curtain or skirt hems.

This object is probably a cast lead token. The earlier tokens were made from pewter but the lead tokens are normally associated with the 17th – 18th centuries. The exact purpose has not been ascertained but it seems most likely that they were used by the working class as a form of low denomination currency as they were made at a time when small change was in short supply. The lead tokens seem to be mainly associated with rural areas. They were often used as a gap filler when when copper and brass tokens ceased to be produced in 1672. Landowners often found lead tokens a useful way to…

A cast lead weight or possibly a seal, probably of Post Medieval date from the 17th–19th century AD. The circular disc has a possible privy mark in the centre of one face. The reverse has a privy mark with a beaded border and looks like it originally had a lettering in it now illegible. A privy mark was originally a small mark or differentiation in the design of a coin for the purpose of identifying the mint, moneyer, or some other aspect of the coin's production or origin, for control purposes. The obverse has a central motiff of a flower possibly a rose. The diameter of the stamp i…
