Incomplete cast copper alloy mount in the form of a stylised acorn with an integral suspension loop for suspending a sword scabbard from a baldric. The mount is missing its sheet copper alloy backplate that would have been riveted to the hollow back through the small rivet hole, 1 mm in diameter, just below the pointed terminal, in order to mount it on to the leather baldric. The suspension loop would have had a pendant that would have attached to the sword belt or scabbard. The mount is plano-convex in profile with four chamfered longitudinal sides that follow the curvature of the mo…

Cast copper alloy hooked mount from a sword belt dating from c.1500-1600. The object is one of the three hooked mounts that would have been suspended from a larger mount riveted to a belt. The hooked mount has foliate decoration and a single hook which terminates in a spherical knop. The suspension loop is still attached to the hook but broken where it would have joined the central mount. The attachment plate of the hook is leaf shaped with small foliate knops at either side just below the hook and at the other end there are two semi-circular cut outs which lead into two larger knops …

Cast copper alloy dagger guard with two quillons on either side of a central block, dating from the 16th to the 17th century. Both quillons survive and are hexagonal in section with expanding terminals which end in flat faces which are both decorated with incised plain crosses. The central block is rectangular in profile and oval in plan with a rectangular aperture, 12 mm long by 5 mm wide, for the now missing iron tang to pass through. The junctions of the central block with the quillons are flush with the lower face but recessed from the upper face. The flat face is undecorated but …

The extant side tapers from 17 mm wide and 5 mm thick at the neck end to 8 mm wide and 3 mm thick at the broken rounded terminal. The exterior surface of the remaining side is decorated with several panels of incised florets and foliage separated by pairs of parallel lines. The junctions of the sides with the neck of the spur are marked by raised moulded lozenge which narrows into the neck. The neck is a barr…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy spur dating from the Post-medieval period. The short sides, which are hemispherical in section, have been broken beyond where the spur would have attached to the boot. The neck is oval in section and quite short but droops in a continuous, elegant, curve in profile. In plan the neck is waisted and widens to a straight rowel box with rounded expanded terminals. The rowel is missing but there are traces of iron reside in one of the suspension holes. Read (1988) illustrates a spur with a similar drooped and expanded rowel box, but with a longer neck, on…

Cast copper alloy cauldron leg, sub-triangular in plan and plano-convex in section. The attachment to the curved vessel body still remains, and the leg then tapers evenly to a transverse collar and then to the foot which has worn to a rounded end. The outer face of the leg has five vertical ribs, varying in width from 7 mm at the edge, to 11 mm in the centre, which terminate at the transverse collar which divides the leg from the foot. The foot might have originally also been ridged, but it is now so worn it has lost its claw-like terminal. The back of the leg is flat and has been del…
