Treasure case 2009 T399
Description: Silver whistle, made of thin silver sheet, well-shaped mouthpiece, square opening, tapering to the end which has been broken off. Along the length of the whistle, five projecting flanges, in silver, these with traces of gilding.
Dimensions: Length: 57.40mm, Width at mouthpiece: 9.21mm, Width at widest point, including decoration: 15.81mm, Weight: 6.12g
Discussion: Date uncertain, but the unusual flanges suggest possibly 16th century date.
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as…

Two lead post-medieval or modern whistles. Both are of simple cylindrical construction and one is largely incomplete, split lengthways. The complete example has a circular hole running through the centre and a sub-triangular notch cut into one face behind one end.
Simple whistles like these are common finds and were usually crudely made on a small scale so are difficult to date, but are usally fairly modern.

A complete lead alloy post-medieval or modern whistle. It is cylindrical in shape with a wider flat disc attached to the outer end and a rounded raised collar around the centre. One side of the inner end curves inwards and has a separate section attached across it to create a mouthpiece. It survives in good condition, but where the surface of the metal has been scratched a silvery surface has been revealled.
Small pewter whistles like this one are common finds and may have had a variety of functions, although they are often referred to as 'hawking whistles' because some were no dou…

An incomplete lead-alloy whistle dating to the modern period. The object appears to have been rolled into a cylinder, with one end cut and folded to create a D-shaped mouth-piece. The object has been slightly bent out of shape. There is a casting seem running along the bottom up to the mouthpiece and a separate in situ lead-alloy reed extending 10.80mm out from the lower part of the whistle.

A probable lead post-medieval weight. It appears to have been moulded within a thimble as faint rows of raised dots can be seen on its surface. The shape of the thimble suggests a later post-medieval date. A number of similar examples have been recorded with the PAS including CPAT-DBF4E1 and CPAT-CA6EA1 from Wales and BERK-23A342 from Warwickshire. The identifier of two examples from Wales has suggested that they may be moulded for the manufacture of thimbles due to the indentations on their surface, but this would seem unlikely given that this would only produce indentations on the i…

A complete copper alloy late medieval or post-medieval trade weight. It is disk shaped with two concentric gooved circles and a central incised dot on the outer face. The reverse is undecorated and covered in tool marks. A crown above a lombardic letter 'h' is stamped towards the edge of the outer face.
Biggs (1992, 48-9) suggests that trade weights stamped with this motif date to between 1495-1549. The motif was an indication that the weight conformed to new local standards.

A complete copper alloy post-medieval trade weight. It is circular in shape with a raised rim around the outside edge of the upper face. The centre of the upper face has the crowned letters EL at one side with a sword next to them. and a ewer at the other side.
The ewer was stamped on approved weights by the London Founders Company between 1590-1826 and is typically accompanied by the City of London (Guildhall) mark - the sword of St Paul - the letter A (absent on this example), and the royal cypher - in this case EL for Elizabeth I (Biggs 1992, 50).

A complete lead post-medieval probable curtain weight or toy. It consists of a simple lead disk with three holes in the centre. Such a simple object may have had multiple purposes, but probably functioned as a weight perhaps for curtains. Alternatively it may have been a child's whirligig or buzz wheel toy, although most of these have serrated edges.

A complete lead probable medieval or post-medieval weight. It is roughly disk-shaped, but very crudely formed with a square hole just off centre, suggesting that it was not used as a spindle whorl, but rather a weight of some kind. It survives in fair condition with some scratches on both surfaces.
Its crude form makes it difficult to date precisely, but it seems likely to be of medieval or later date. A number of similar weights have been recorded with the PAS from other areas, including: HESH-3CEFA3, KENT-635634 and KENT-71E001.

A complete lead medieval to post-medieval weight, possibly an apothacaries weight. It is a flat and almost square is shape, although slightly distorted. A crude mark formed from lines, possibly a letter 'W', has been scratched on one face.
Withers and Withers (1995, 65) illustrate a similar example, also with a letter W on one surface, which they list as an apothecaries' weight. A similar example has been recorded on the PAS database from Sussex: SUR-D85EA7. Due to its undiagonstic nature it is difficult to assign a date as simple weights like this were in use for a long period of…

A complete lead Roman to post-medieval pan weight. It is roughly disc-shaped with a raised rim around the circumference of both faces. One face has a faint incised cross in the centre. The other face is very pitted and uneven, but appears to be undecorated. All of the surfaces have been heavily worn producing a shiny patina and there is some damage and corrosion in places.
Egan (2005, 163, fig.160, no.838) illustrates a very similar excavations from excavation in London, found in a context dated c.AD 1630-50. Weights like this were in use from the Roman period onwards, however.

A complete lead medieval to post-medieval weight. It is square in shape with a rounded outer face and a flat reverse. The centre of the outer face is decorated with a recessed circle surrounded by four crude, scratched lines. The reverse is decorated with a cross formed from rope impressed into the metal with various crude lines and shapes in the four quarters. Three corners are rounded; the fourth is damaged and misshapen.
The object weights roughly 3/4 of a pound, suggesting that it may have functioned as a weight. Its crude form makes it difficult to date precisely, but it seems li…
