Copper alloy shoe or knee buckle, c.1660-1720. The buckle is rectangular in shape with rounded corners. The upper face of the buckle is decorated with wide grooves along each of the longer sides, each containing within it a number of very small incised circles, some overlapping. The shorter sides are rounded and undecorated. Each end of the buckle is bent backwards slightly, causing the object to be 'c' shaped when viewed from the side. The frame has two holes drilled through each of the longer sides, which would have held a seperate spindle. This is now missing. The object is grey in…

Copper alloy single loop buckle, c.1500-1650. The buckle is 'C' shaped with expanded splayed feet protruding at either end of a narrowed and recessed strap bar. Attached to the middle of the strap bar, extending all the way round, is the heavily erroded remains of an iron pin. The buckle is undecorated. The metal is grey-brown in colour with patches of greenish errosion. There is a small portion of what appears to be oxidised iron attached to one corner of the upper face. The buckle appears to be a rounder variation on the similar sub-retangular buckles found in Whitehead, pp.28-9. …

Post-Medieval copper alloy thimble. It has slightly sloping sides and a domed crown. It appears to be made from a single metal sheet and the seam is still visible as a slight crack running up from the base. There is also another small crack running up from the base on the opposite side. Small, round indentations form a spiral around the outside running from the base to the apex of the crown, which according to Holmes (1991, p.2) suggests a post medieval date, from the 16th century up to the early 17th. Inside the thimble appears to be the remains of some very fine fabric lining, which …

There is a small portion of the body of the vessel still attached. This is fairly thin and has an uneven edge where it broke away from the original vessel. On the inside face are two scratch marks, which probably occurred following deposition. The handle lug extends upwards from the rim. It is rounded and bent slightly out of shape. At the base of this, partially through the rim, is a hole, which probably would have allowed a handle of some sort to be…

The seal has a design on one face and is undecorated on the other. Around the outside edge of the decorated face is an inscription enclosed by a thin raised border. However, parts of this are either highly eroded or missing altogether, rendering the inscription practically illegible. Only the letters SV and possibly L are visible. In the centre of this is the arms of England surmounted by a crown. To the left of the arms is a pellet and possibly a su…

Copper alloy Post-Medieval double loop buckle. The upper surface is decorated with what is possibly a vine scroll motif within a sunken field, though this is somewhat difficult to make out due to corrosion. The reverse face is undecorated. The central strap bar is narrowed and recessed. Part of the pin remains in situ. However, the end of this appears to have broken away. The metal is greenish grey, with small silvery patches on the prominent areas of the pattern. The pin is orange-brown in colour suggesting a high iron content. A number of decorated double loop buckles have been e…

Post medieval copper alloy button. The button is biconvex, but very misshapen. The upper face is decorated with two raised leaf-like sections. Attached to the lower face is a long integral shank, square in section where it joins on to the button, but becoming wider and flattened towards the end. The end of the shank is rounded and slightly bent at the tip. It is pierced with a small hole. The button is similar to numbers 174-182 in ‘Metal Buttons c.900BC-c.AD 1700’, by Read (2005, 51-52). These are also biconvex with long integral pierced shanks, though none are decorated as this o…

Probably medieval copper alloy strap loop. It is sub-rectangular in shape. One of the longer sides is straight, with a flat inner edge and rounded outer edge. The ends of this side protrude slightly beyond the corners of the loop. The other sides are rectangular in section. The other longer side has a break in the middle, where a portion is missing. The object is undecorated. It lacks the usual rivet holes or projections of strap loops, but probably functioned as one nonetheless.
