An incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval sword belt fitting. It consists of a main plate, which is expanded in the centre, becoming narrower towards its surviving end, which terminates in a trefoil terminal with a small hole through its centre. The other end of this plate is missing. Two loops project from its lower edge and suspended from each is a smaller mount with a hooked terminal. A third mount was found separately with damage to either end and this would have attached to a further loop on the missing section originally. Each mount has a lobe to either side of its inner end belo…

An incomplete copper alloy strap fitting of probably late medieval to post-medieval date. It is rectangular in shape and centrally split to one side, remaining solid at the other. The split side has a rounded section projecting from the centre of each face, which probably joined to formed a loop originally. The reverse of the solid side is bevelled and there is a small semi-circular notch in the centre of the edge of its outer face. There is a small circular hole through each of the four corners, all containing corroded copper alloy and iron material. The outer face has a fine engrave…

A complete copper alloy post-medieval strap mount. The object is conical in shape with a concave outer face and concave reverse. The outer face has concentric grooves around the outside and centre and a small knop extending from the centre. There is an integral lug to either side of the reverse. A number of similar example have now been recorded with the PAS and Dr Kevin Leahy suggests a post-medieval date range, c.AD 1500-1650 (see PAS record FAKL-0BA78E). Description: A complete silver post-medieval strap fitting. The object is roughly an elongated oval shape, but with straight outer ends. The outer face is decorated with two triangular notches cut into each outer end, a band of cross-hatched decoration across each end behind these and the inscription Richard Guuen with 1686 below formed from small dots. The date is surrounded by a series of small groups of dots and there is a v-shaped line flanked by a wavy line all formed from dots above the name. To the reverse of the object there is a rectangular loop formed from a strip of metal, …

An incomplete copper alloypost- medieval strap fitting comprising three separate components, one detached. The group includes a strap mount with a separate hoop attached and a bent strip of metal, which was apparently found within the loop at the base of the mount. The mount consists of a square outer plate with a rectangular cross-sectioned strip extending from the lower end, which curves around to the reverse forming a loop and terminates in a lozenge-shaped knop, attached via a copper alloy rivet to the reverse of the square plate. The separate hoop is D-shaped in cross-section and…

A complete copper alloy post-medieval swivel fitting. The object consists of a central oval knob pieced with a circular hole, within which two separate components are attached. Each of these components consists of an outer multi-faceted knob pierced horizontally with a circular hole, a collar around the base of this and a bar extending from behind the collar into the hole in the central knob. All three components are attached, but able to move separately. One of the holes on one of the outer components is filled with iron corrosion, suggesting that it formed part of a larger mechanism…

A complete copper alloy strap fitting of probable post-medieval date. It is formed from two rectangular plates, one slightly smaller than the other, which are secured together through a hole at either end of both via an in situ copper alloy rivet. The two plates sit slightly at an angle to one another. A hook, formed simply from a strip of metal extends from one side of the larger plate, sitting slightly off centre. It survives in fairly good condition with a green patina. The object seems likely to be a strap fitting/hook tag of post-medieval date, although an earlier date cannot …

An incomplete post-medieval copper alloy sword belt fitting. It is oval in shape with a break at either end and is slightly curved in profile. Its outer face is decorated with an engraved geometric design against a background of punched annulets. To the reverse two irregularly shaped copper plates are rivetted in place at one end. The outer one of these plates appears to be broken at its inner end and may have been larger originally. The fitting survives in good condition with a fine, shiny green patina. A complete gilded copper alloy post-medieval strap fitting. It is long and narrow in form with a trefoil terminal at one end and a fork at the other. There is a small circular attachment hole through each end. There is iron corrosion around the forked end and to the reverse and traces of gilding in places on the outer face. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded and it is bent at almost a right-angle when viewed from the side. The object may have functioned as a strap end or possibly a book fitting. Its form and the presence of gilding suggest a post-medieval date. Length:…

An incomplete copper alloy probable post-medieval fitting. It consists of an open triangular section with the remains of two damaged loops to either side of the pointed end and a small loop at either end of the straight side. Two broken strips of metal extending outwards from these smaller loops, presumably part of another open section. An incomplete copper alloy post-medieval strap fitting. It consists of a long strip of metal, folded in two at one end and held together here via an in situ copper alloy rivet. An incomplete copper alloy post-medieval strap fitting. It consists of a roughly rectangular plate, divided into several sections by deep grooves on the outer face, and an inwards curving arm to each end on the reverse. These arms both have breaks at the ends suggesting that they were longer originally and probably curved further round. Margeson (1993, 41, fig.23, no.288) illustrates a similar example from excavations in Norwich, which is described as a 'belt stiffener' and was found in an undated context. It is also very similar in form to a number of other examples recorded on t…
