A fragment of a copper-alloy medieval to post-medieval spoon. Only part of the stem and inner bowl survive. The stem is circular in cross-section, tapering towards its outer end and bent into a C-shape. The inner part of the bowl suggests that it was circular or fig-shaped originally. This style of spoon tends to be later Medieval or early Post-Medieval in date, but without additional markings or the knop at the end of the stem to guide us it is hard to pinpoint the date further. Length: 42.14mm, Width: 20.91mm, Thickness: 4.24mm, Weight: 6.39g

A fragment of a copper alloy post-medieval 'seal top' spoon. Only the terminal of the handle survives with moulded decoration consisting of - from top to bottom - a disc at the apex; below a flattened knob with transverse grooves dividing its outer face into five lobes; a narrow, waisted section; a wider knob, tapering towards its lower end, its outer face divided by transverse grooves in five lobes; a raised collar. A small section of the square cross-sectioned stem projects from the lower end, but this tapers rapidly to a sharp point, perhaps a deliberate modification at a later dat…

Description: A fragment of a gilded silver post-medieval 'seal top' spoon. Only the terminal of the handle survives. This culminates in a flat disc with bands of decoration behind it, which is reminiscent of a seal matrix, hence the common name for these. The bands of decoration consist of - from top to bottom - a wide section, swelling towards the top, decorated with moulded fern-like scrolls, followed by a narrow band, then a gap and then a hemispherical section with swag-like moulding around it. The outer face of the disc bears the letters "*W*//I*B" pecked out in dots. There is an…

Complete copper alloy Post-Medieval seal top spoon. The stem is slightly flattened and culminates in a thin circumferential band, followed by a (possibly) foliate knop and then a rounded section decorated with longitudinal grooves, culminating in a flat 'seal top'. This section is so called because it resembles the seal matrices used during this period and earlier to make impressions in sealing wax. The bowl is 'fig' shaped. The spoon is in fairly good condition with a greenish patina and some pitting. Traces of silvering can be seen in places, particularly on the bowl. It is of late 1…

Just below the owner's mark there is a date letter apparently an 'N' possibly the London hall mark for 1570-1571. London-made slip top spoons are often marked with a date letter in this position. Incomplete cast copper alloy Post-Medieval spoon. All that remains is the part of the bowl and part of the stem. The remains of the bowl suggest that it was originally fig shaped. A maker's mark can be seen on the front face of the bowl, above the stem, and is perhaps a sun or a rose surrounded by a circular border of pellets. The stem is sub-oval in section and around half is missing. The presence of the maker's mark suggests that the spoon is of later 16th or 17th century date Length: 63.28mm, Width: 35.21mm, Thickness of stem: 3.19mm Weight: 12.05g

A Post-Medieval pewter terminal, probably from a spoon. The terminal knop is round and slightly flattened; oval in cross-section, if looking at it from the top. It is decorated with diagonal grooved lines. Below it is a collar decorated with one groove and below this remains 5.54mm of stem, sub-rectangular in cross-section. The object is pitted with erosion and slightly damaged in places. Similar pewter spoons may be seen in Egan (2005, pp. 110-117) ‘Material Culture in London in the Age of Transition’. Spoon 526 (ibid. p.110), in particular is very similar, with the same diago…
