A silver sixpence of James II, (1685-1688). Reverse: []; crowned cruciform shields. Obverse: laureate bust left. The coin has been curved into a gentle S-shape indicating that it may have been reused as a 'love token'. The bust has been stamped with an oval countermark which is worn.

Reverse: MAG [BR] FRA ]ET HIB REX]; double arched crown over crossed sceptre, XXX above. These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James attempted to recover the English throne and were ultimately intended to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt, and the coins were never exchanged. Spink (2002) pp 169-170
