Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A solid lead alloy weight in the form of a thimble. It appears that the weight has been formed by pouring lead into a thimble casing then being allowed to cool; the pits of the thimble are evident around the circumference and on the peak of the weight. There are two small imperfections near the peak of the weight, sticking up like ears and possibly from clamping or pinching. These may have been made when removing the casing. The form of the thimble allows the dating of the weight; the pits are regular and even; it is likely that the thimble itself dates from c. AD 1650 - 1850, and the…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy double loop 'spectacle' buckle with bevelled outer frame edges with moulded linear decoration. Just over half of the original buckle survives; the narrowed strap bar is missing its pin and all of the second loop is now absent. There is a slight knop at one end of the strap bar. Whitehead (1996:54) illustrates similar oval buckles with bevelled inside edges and narrowed strap bars (e.g. Nos.305 & 310), which are dated from c. AD 1500-1650.

A worn silver groat of Elizabeth I (AD 1558-1603), now broken in two. The intial mark appears to be an ermine, which would date the coin to c. AD 1572-73, however the wear and damage to the coin makes the reading difficult. There does not appear to be a rose behind the Queen's head, and there is no date above the shield on the reverse, making this identification likely. Probably North 1999.

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy dress hook dating to the early post-Medieval period. Often known as hook-clasps, these fasteners were the button of the day. This example can be compared to Read's single sharp-hooked clasps (p53-54), Class C type 3. Read describes this hook as convex with a semi-circular section, the front plate having hatching with transverse bands. These examples were often inlaid with niello but this example does not retain any. The back plate on this example is also missing, but would have had a square hole presumably for the attachment of the cord or thong. This example measures…

A small lead alloy bell, probably for an animal. The bell is plain but for a ridge above the lip. The bell was made from two seperate elements and joining them together with an alloy strip - the join is clearly visible on this example. Only a small portion of the suspension loop remains on this bell, while internally, two small holes are visible beneath the peak of the bell suggesting that this was the attachment point for the clapper, which no longer survives. This bell probably dates to the post-Medieval period, probably the 17th Century. It measures 26.51mm deep and is 31.57mm in…
