A Post-Medieval gold posy ring. The ring is circular in plan and D-shaped in section. The rounded exterior face is plain, and the interior is iscribed in lower case script Feare god and loue mee. The stem of the F is filled in with diagonal engraved lines. A maker's mark CW appears in a rectangular punch before the inscription. Discussion: This inscription is a well-known posy, appearing in multiple forms in Joan Evans' English Posies and Posy Rings (1931:35). It is also found on several posy rings that have been reported under the Treasure Act and recorded with the Portable Anti…

A gold memorial ring. The inner inscription, preceded by a hand symbol, reads 'absens is grif' (absence is grief) with five-pointed star between the words and followed by a floral sprig. The symbols on the outer surface appear to be S type capitals, one either side of what could be interpreted as two joined XXs with a horizontal line in their centre (or a 'VA' monogram) repeated on the other side of the ring, plus 2 x intertwined capital C's backing onto each other, one set of these either side of the ring between the S and XX scheme. The outer engravings may be the intertwined lovers…

A circular gold ring, almost flat in cross-section. The exterior is decorated by two bands of beading, one along either edge. The beaded dots or pellets are mostly square in shape but irregular, and do not appear machine made; they seem to result from the use of a rectangular punch which made two pellets at a time. The beaded lines are separated from the centre of the hoop by a narrow ridge, and the centre is undecorated and slightly sunken. There is no decoration on the inner surface. Dimensions: Diameter: 17mm. Height: 5.5mm. Thickness: 0.5mm. Weight: 2…

A Post-Medieval gold mourning ring. The ring consists of a circular band of d-shaped section. The exterior is plain except for the engraved image of a skull, outlined in black enamel. The inner face of the band contains the inscription Marsden Ar. Ob: 4 Jan 87. The ring measures 16mm in diameter and weighs 2.92g. Mourning rings were worn to commemorate the loss of an acquaintance or loved one. From at least the 17th century, some people set aside money in their will for the creation of a number of mourning rings to be distributed amongst their friends and family, a practice which con…

This ring has been squashed virtually flat so it is difficult to tell what the original section was (ie whether it was more D shaped than it appears now), but the use of the long 'S' in the inscription suggests a 17th century date. Part of the inscription is illegible because if the damage to the ring, but I am fairly sure that the full wording would have been: 'God for ever bless us together'. A similar inscription is recorded by Joan Evans in her book on posy rings of 1930. In this instance the words 'for ever' are missing. The inscription is preceded by what must be a maker's mar…

Tiny thin, Post-Medieval gold posy ring inscribed inside 'A frends gift'. Joan Evans (1931, p. xviii) suggests that these very small posy rings were intended as gift to little girls whose names were drawn for valentines.

This gold finger-ring with a double setting for two stones, now missing, is thinly constructed with a ridge along the centre of the hoop. It may possibly date from the 17th Century but it more is likely to be 18th Century and does not therefore fall within the Treasure Act.

A gold finger-ring with a d-shaped band. The complex bezel holds out a colourless cut stone and it is backed by a heart with pale blue enamel covering most of it, although much is chipped. Two tapered grooves run along the top and bottom of each shoulder, and within these, futther pale-blue enamel is evident; there are also very slight traces of black enamel.

This ring of hollow construction has a flat interior and a rounded exterior with twisted wire borders. Analysis has shown it to be an unusual composition that does not conform to gold carat standards.
