The coin is perforated at the base of the reverse (to avoid the King's bust?) by punching it with a lozenge shaped hole from the reverse. The coin is 11.7mm diameter, 0.6mm thick. 0.42g. Die Axis: 9. Obverse: Crowned bust left with I behind [CAROL]VS D [...] Reverse: Oval garnished shield [IVSTITIA THR]ONVM [FIRMAT]

A pierced Post Medieval silver coin; a half groat of Charles I (AD 1625 - 1649), Group A, cross calvary initial mark dating from AD 1625 - 1626. Tower mint. See North number 2248 on page 161 of North Volume 2 (1991). The coin is 16.36mm diameter, and weighs 0.83g. The coin is perforated at about 10o'clock on the obverse, just inside the legend. The hole was probably made from the reverse, but there appears to be displaced metal on both faces.
