An incomplete Post-Medieval Continental coin of either copper alloy or base silver. It is probably a low denomination coin such as a quarter stuber from East Freisia (Oostfreesland). Only part of the legend is legible, and the designs are illegible. It is 16.9mm diameter, 0.9mm thick and 0.6g, but about a third of the coin is missing. Compare NLM-949DC4 which also has EDZ (for Prince Edzard of Ostfriedland) in the legend. Edzard I - The Great (AD 1491-1528) is probably too early for the style of this coin, so Edzard II (AD 1561-1599), Count of East Freisia is more likely. For a sil…

A probably Modern copy of a Post Medieval silver coin; a shilling of Edward IV, third period (AD 1550 - 1553). Only about a third of the coin survives. Where is is broken, two layers of metal can be seen, suggesting the coin was made in two parts. The silver on the face of the coin is also laminating in places, perhaps suggesting it is a plated copy. The field of the coin is also textured, often a sign of a copy. The coin is imitating a fine silver shilling. Compare North number 1937 on page 123 of Volume II. The coin is 30.6mm long, 18.7mm wide and 1.1mm thick. 2.6g.

A Post Medieval coin; a Scottish twenty pence of Charles I (AD 1625 - 1649), perhaps a contemporary copy as the material looks to be base silver or copper alloy rather than silver. It is probably imitating a Class IV twenty pence of the third coinage (1637 - 1642). Compare Seaby number 5589 on page 84 of Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands. The coin is 16mm diameter, 0.6mm thick and is 0.97g.

A post-medieval silver coin: a debased silver groat of Henry VIII (1509-1547), third coinage, Southwark mint, 1544-1547. The flan is ragged and some of the blanched silver surface of the coin has eroded away to reveal the copper alloy beneath. It is 24.3mm in diameter and 0.9mm thick. It weighs 1.85gm. Reference: North, Vol.2, No. 1844.
