It is circular and has a design in relief on both faces. One face has a monogram of the letters MHL or HML in a tressure of four lobes, surrounded by a beaded border. The other face has a square topped shield embellished with scrolls at the top and sides. The shield is quartered. Quarter 1 (top left) bears a forward facing bull with horns; quarter 2 (top right) is a griffin rampant left. It is partially obscured by a deep circular depression. The third quarter (bottom right) is a stag's head in profile. The 4th quarter (bottom left) is either an arm bent at the elbow, perhaps holding a wreath or other circular item, or is a poorly cast downward pointing chevron. The shield appears to be in the style of the Stuart period, but the charges have a slightly cartoonish appearance, and may be later in date, emulating an older style. The token has a pelleted border. The token is 36.3mm diameter, 5.3mm thick. 45.7g.MHL or HML3636165019004SWYOR2023-10-29T00:00:00Z2023-10-29T00:00:00ZPAS form number 42552024-02-11T22:38:06Z2024-02-20T19:12:29Z45.7PAS65C94C4E0011C936.35.319141141430220282101321055North YorkshireSelbySherburn in ElmetSE483253.78212184-1.27302434bands.shops.handy6SWYOR-94C87ALead11094CastCompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderSWYOR-94C4E2_65d4e8b399fd6.jpg1264271images/ikw1945/Yorkshire and the HumberProbably22024-02-20T19:12:29.138Zfinds-11500961150096SWYOR-9464E4TOKENPOST MEDIEVALA lead Post Medieval token of Powell type 3 dating from AD 1550 - 1850. It is of Walton Rogers form C2. It is biconical with a design of raised pellets on one face. The whorl is miss-cast with much of one face missing. The other face has faint crossed raised lines on it, and a large lump of lead projecting from the face. The whorl is 30.2mm diameter, 16.2mm thick and 39.1g. The central hole is 8.3mm diameter.
Walton Rogers dates form C2 whorls from 1100 onwards. She cites Ivens et al (1995) that those with dots are Post Medieval. Decorated bi-conical whorls found in stratified contexts in Leicester and Derbyshire have been dated to the late Medieval period, about 1450-1540 (Austin Friars; Clay. It is a stamped sheet disc, probably one element of a cuff link. It is circular in plan with a down-turned or flanged edge. It is decorated with two hearts beneath a single crown on a stippled background. The attachment loop in the centre of the reverse is missing, as are the joining loop and the second disc. The hollow reverse contains some white concretion.
Dimensions: 12.9mm diameter, 2.7mm thick and 1.1g.
The cufflink is very similar to a recently recorded example found nearby, SWYOR-99A7CA (2021 T422). The crown over hearts motif, commonly found on 17th century cuff-links and buttons, may have celebrated the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza in 1662 (Treasure Annual Report 2001, 81, no. 153). Compare also SWYOR-719D77 (2009 T198), SWYOR-72FB98 (2015 T840) and SWYOR-8D201E (2018 T27) amongst others on the database. The object appears to contain a minimum of 10% silver and is over 300 years old. Consequently it appears to qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.Lewis Form 1, Type A36361600170012023T9543SWYOR2023-09-29T00:00:00Z2023-09-29T00:00:00Z2023-10-04T12:13:27Z2024-03-21T13:24:48Z1.1PAS651D48D7001ED012.92.7122232141430220282104921055North YorkshireSelbyCawoodSE593753.82592827-1.1051507bands.shops.handy10SWYOR-D49338Silver11728IncompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorSubmitted for consideration as Treasure1131687_651d498f10bf9.jpg1243891images/acooper/Yorkshire and the HumberCertain12024-03-21T13:24:48.463Zfinds-11247761124776SWYOR-B424E7SEAL MATRIXPOST MEDIEVALA Post mediaeval rococo style silver gilt fob seal matrix dating from AD 1650 - 1800, with a red coloured intaglio depicting a woman's bust facing right (on the intaglio). The handle is soldered on. It is openwork and features a scalloped shell motif in the centre, surrounded by foliate scrolls. Two opposed scrolls at the top support the circular suspension loop which is surmounted by a knop. The loop is in the same plane as the handle. The seal matrix weighs 7.63g. It is probably a button. It is in the form of a simple lead shallow dome, flat on the base and convex on the front. There is no evidence of attachment. The artefact has a light cream patina. It is 15.7mm diameter, 5.2mm thick. and 6g. It is probably the unfinished head of a button, with a separate attachment missing. It could also be a spilled droplet of lead which has solidified, though it does seem too regular and circular for that.3636160019004SWYOR2022-08-14T00:00:00Z2022-08-14T00:00:00ZPAS form number 38872022-12-29T15:17:14Z2023-02-01T22:15:35Z6PAS63ADAF7A00196D15.75.21912141430167581656016758WakefieldWakefieldPontefract NorthSE462353.70141555-1.30471014bands.shops.handy10SWYOR-DAFB8ALead11094IncompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderSWYORDAF7A9PostMedievalButtoncopy.jpg1212380images/ikw1945/Yorkshire and the HumberPossibly32023-02-01T22:15:35.686Z
