Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Solid cast cannon ball that is made of iron, one side is heavily corroded resulting in an area of heavy blistering. At a diameter of approximately 4" this cannonball would most likely be used by a type of cannon called a demi-culverin. The Demi-culverin was a large artillery piece that because of its effective range and power was often used in sieges and building demolition.
Moreover, after the failed siege of Gloucester in 1643, the Royalist army withdrew to overnight in Painswick after a small conflict centred around the church in the village. As a result, it is a compelling p…

Socketed, leaf-shaped spearhead or lance made from wrought iron and dating to the post-Medieval Period.
This item has a leaf shaped blade (188mm long, 43mm wide, 10mm thick) which has a shallow, even lenticular cross section. Although overall the blade is in excellent condition albeit encrusted in iron corrosion, some of the edges have been truncated by corrosion, but this loss is minor. The socket has a circular cross-section and is 80mm long with an external diameter at the aperture of 22mm, (internal diameter 17mm). Extending from the base of the socket are two langets (103m…

This is a rare complete Post-Medieval iron knife handle and blade dated to AD.1500-1600. The knife blade is thin with a low curved blade on one side and think spine on the other, although this is heavily corroded it still retains its original shape. The handle is circular in section (8mm, near the blade expanding to 11mm near the terminal). The terminal is formed from a globular base, then a flanged collar and finally a lozenge shape tip.
A similar all iron construction can be found in LON-C21A9C and LON-7B8302

This cannonball particularly interesting as it comes from an area where the royalists were thought to have been encamped during the battle of Highnam in 1643

Iron knife with a solid integral iron handle that is rectangular in cross-section and slightly tapes to the blade, the pommel is spherical with a knop terminal. The blade has a rounded end (choil) and a straight flat spine, most of the blade has been truncated.
Egon describes these types of knifes with integral handles as a 'late 16th century fashion' (Egan, 2005, 87). A similar example was found in an excavation in London and dated to 1575-1600 (Egan, 2005, 87-88)
