Copper alloy fitting of possible post Medieval date. The fragment consists of a metal plate, decorated, on both faces, with a palmette executed by cutting back the surface to leave a reserved design. While both faces are similar on one side the palmette leaves are rounded while on the other side they are triangular and rougher in execution. At the focus of the palmette is a 3mm diameter hole, countersunk on the better face. Above the palmette is a lys motif, which, on the poorer side, is negative: it is not reserved. Both ends of the plate are broken. This object is difficult to id…

Post Medieval cannon ball, or ball from ball mill. Cast iron with a diameter ranging between 83.6mm and 80.5mm (c. 3.3 inches. The ball weighs 1997.1g (4.4 pounds) and fails to fit into any of the accepted calibres for Civil War, or later ordnance hence the suggestion that it may have come from a ball mill. This might be supported by its lack of symmetry. A ball mill consisted of a horizontal, revolving drum which contained iron balls. As the cylinder turned the constantly falling balls pulverised material placed in the drum. Ball mills were used in the preparated of powders for makin…

Post Medieval coin weight for checking a gold Angel. The weight is roughly circular one face bearing, in relief the figure of the Archangel Michael spearing dragon, the other side is plain. This weight is very similar to SF-9CA117 where the type is discussed in detail. Its mass, 66 grains suggesting that dates from 1604-1619 when the Angel weighed 71 grains, the disparity being due to corrosion and coin weights being set to the minimum legal weight. Diameter 16.7mm, Mass 4.22g.
