Post Medieval button, (c. 1600-1700). Cast pewter/lead alloy with an integral loop on its back. This is placed on the line of the casting mould joint. On the front of the button is a crude face with a wedge-shaped nose, pellet eyes above which are eye-brows and bar representing the mount. There appears to be a crown over the top of the face. This button may be compared to NLM-D526F2 which, in turn, is compared to buttons bearing the CR monogram suggesting a seventeenth century date. Certainly these buttons are technically, if not stylistically, similar. If this is a depiction of the k…

Post Medieval toggle, cast copper alloy, the attachment being in the form of two, conjoined rings linked by a flat-sectioned bar to a cylindrical fitting, the ends of which are pointed. Length 24.5mm, Width 23.0mm, Thickness 8.0mm, Mass 8.09g. Objects like this present something of a problem which is reviewed in the discussion of SOM-5CC893. None have ever been found in a dated context. They were initially described as the pestles from Roman cosmetic grinders which seems unlikely in view of their small size. Comparison can be made with Roman toggles and button and loop fasteners bu…
