Incomplete, clipped, silver shilling of Charles I (AD1625-49).. Group F, North 2231. im: Triangle 1639 - 40. Tower Mint. Coin is worn but inscription is distinct. Clipping has removed part of legend. Obverse: Portrait facing left with XII behind. Beaded internal and external border. I.M. triangle. Legend: CAROLUS D.G. MAG'BRY [ ] HIB.REX Reverse: Square royal shield on cross fourchee. m.m. triangle. Legend: •CHRISTO__ AVS__CE•REGNO• Coin is 31.66mm diameter, 0.85 mm thick and 5.9g.

A clipped post-medieval silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649), probably minted at the Tower under Parliament. The initial mark is partially clipped and worn smooth, and is thus illegible. The obverse bust and reverse cross most closely match North (1991, 160) Group F ref:2231. This would date the coin to between 1641 and 1643. Obverse: [.CAROLVS.D.G.MAG.BR.FR.ET.H]I.REX.; Crowned bust left with XII (mark of value) behind head Reverse: .CHRISTO.AVSPICE.REGNO. (I reign under the auspice of Christ); Square topped shield over cross Moline Diameter: 29.65mm. Weight: 5.9g. DA=4:00.
