Object type: SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval to post-medieval cast lead-alloy seal, possibly for a bag or cloth and dating to the period c.1400-1800. The seal comprises a disc with a sprue of circular cross section emerging from one side. The sprue is bent back on itself and terminates in a worn break. This would likely have been attached to a lead ring through which the rivet on the back of the remaining seal would have passed. The circular seal is decorated on the upper surface by a fleur-de-lis set within a thin border. The back of the seal has a short rivet and retains traces of a moulded pattern.

A complete Post Medieval gold posy finger ring with internal inscription, of late 17th- or 18th-century date. It has a D-shaped or perhaps slightly biconvex cross-section, and an undecorated exterior. There is some damage to the edges of the band, small nicks and impact damage though possibly through use wear. The flattish interior is inscribed with italic letters reading I like . ym . choise * The reversal of the letters in 'my' may be a mistake of the engraver. The style of lettering and the spelling of 'choise' with an S suggests a 17th-18th century date. External diameter 21.9…
