Copper alloy Post Medieval probable padlock body. Discoidal in shape (35mm dia. by 12.4mm thick) and plain on both faces. Although box like in construction the significant weight and emanating rust suggests it contains an iron mechanism, and is not just a hollow container. There is prolific iron corrosion on the sides and on both facing surfaces, the spacial relationship of which suggests they are probably associated with the hasp and keyhole of a post medieval padlock. One face has three circular rivet heads placed equidistantly around the periphery of the circular body…

Lead or lead alloy semi-circular lead weight. The weight was probably originally discoidal but has been severed across the centre making it semi-circular in plan. As such the cut is accurate and square-edged, suggesting it has been done deliberately rather than through damage. Similar weights are recorded at YORYM-2C4B44 and  SF-42A486 with dates ranging from late Early Medieval to Post Medieval. There are no obvious decoration or validation marks surviving on either face of this example. The weight is 42.48g or 14.98 ounces. Lead weights were banned …

Well worn and patinated Post-Medieval cast copper alloy 2-ounce stacking trade weight of Elizabeth I. The weight is flat and discoidal with a raised rim around the upper surface. The reverse has a central circular pit (repeated on the front) and a series of concentric grooves and radiating file marks;- probably associated with manufacture and calibration. The interior is multi-stamped with the marks of a crowned EL (for Elizabeth I), a Ewer (for the London Founder's Company), a sword (The sword of St. Paul for the City of London Guildhall), and a capitalised …

Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy, uniface, circular, probable coin weight. One face is marked in the upper half with a W, with the roman numerals XXXVI or XXVII below. The other face is blank apart from a central pimple. A coin weight for a Noble is shown on p24 of Withers, P & B, Lions Ships and Angels that is marked with an XXXVI value in roman numerals. At 4.37g (67.4gn) the weight of this object would approximate to a half noble. It is not clear what the W indicates. On this basis, it is likely this is an unofficial coin weight. Circa 1351…

Lead alloy Post-Medieval probable weight or token. The object is flat (1.5mm thick) and sub-square (20mm x 22mm) with an image cast in relief decorating one side. The design is not easily recognisable as a letter or digit, nor any easily discernable symbol. A straight line, close and broadly parallel to one edge has two separate approximately one-third-spaced, down-curving crescents, that spring across the front face and meet close to the opposite edge. Perhaps the most likely interpretation is that of a letter D. The mass is 6.95g, which is just…

Lead alloy, circular (29.6mm diameter) undecorated spindle whorl. Plano-convex with a slightly offset central 12mm circular perforation tapering to 9.5mm at the top. The underside has a concentric shrinkage concavity which is a common feature of the casting process for many of these whorls. Spindle whorls are very much utility devices providing a simple spinning-inertia function when manually turning fibres into yarn. Their use spans the Iron Age, Roman, Early-Medieval, Medieval and early Post-Medieval periods. The hand spindle on&…
