Lead alloy fragment from a Post Medieval cloth seal. The fragment is sub-discoidal (as flattened by the alnage seal matrix) with a short flat tab projecting to one side. The seal depicts a crenelated castle wall with an arched entrance gateway; above the wall part of an arcing beaded border can be seen. Cloth seals depicting images of castles are commonplace in Norfolk, as a lion surmounted by a castle is the arms of Norwich. No lion is evident on this partial impression and insufficient survives to be definitive, especially since many other non-Norwich seals depicting c…

Incomplete Elizabethan two part lead cloth seal dating to circa AD1558-1600. Both circular addorsed discs survive but the connecting ligature strip is missing. The outer face of the impressed disc is decorated with a crowned portcullis surrounded by a circumferential inscription suggesting an Elizabethan date (Egan 1992, 2) the inscription is largely illegible. The reverse has a central integral rivet which has been flattened into a corresponding hole on the impressed face. The portcullis was "the main design for alnage seals in the late Tudor period... and continued in use into …

Worn or eroded fragment of lead alloy alnage cloth seal. It is sub-circular and is in all likelihood the rivet end of the seal that has been squashed flat by the matrix. Visible on the outside face of the seal is a chained portcullis design that was popular from the late Elizabethan period. The portcullis was an emblem of the Tudor dynasty and was stipulated by Elizabeth I to be stamped on cloth seals (S, Elton. Cloth seals, an illustrated reference guide to the identification of lead seals attached to cloth. page 218). Circa AD1570-1700.

Complete Post Medieval lead alloy four-disc cloth alnage seal. The non-rivet discs are both impressed; one side has a shield with a bend between three birds, the other has the date 1667 surmounted by the letters [AY]. The surviving letters indicate the seal is for Kersey cloth, a coarse woollen material of the period. Cf. NMS-74BAF5 and NMS-F18241.

Incomplete leaden post medieval two-disc cloth seal with missing end to the connecting loop. The compressed rivet side is plain, but the other face has the impressed capitalised initials RC. Given the find was made in Norfolk these initials could be those of the warden that oversaw the quality of worsted cloth, which tally for the year 1702 AD. (Egan 1987, 416.) However, with the absence of any other corroborating marks this conclusion can only be tentative.

An incompletelead cloth seal of Post-Medieval date. The seal is atwo disc type which were joined by an integral central strip and sealed by compressing a central rivet. The front of the seal bears the raised design of the letter "A" the chevron crossbar of which remains clear. The reverse depicts a pinecone or thistle device. The 'A' and pinecone design indicates the seal will have originated in Augsburg, Germany as the pinecone is the heradlic badge of the city. It is suggested that such seals were attached to fustians, a variety of heavy cloth woven from cotton and chiefly prepared f…
