A Late Medieval/ Early Post-Medieval Venetian silver soldino of Doge Leonardo Loredan (1501-1521). It is worn and has a die axis of 8. On the reverse to the left of the figure there is an 'X' scratched onto the coin.
During the 15th and 16th centuries the English economy experienced a serious shortage of English-struck halfpennies. In order to fill this gap people began using foreign coinage such as the soldino, meaning 'little shilling', which entered into English currency through Venetian traders.
