Post Medieval or possibly Late Medieval cast copper alloy button. The button has a circular head with a steeply domed top with a prominent pellet in the centre of the front. The front is decorated with regularly spaced raised ridges running from the pellet to the edge. The back of the head is flat and from it projects an integral, elongated oval, loop. The loop is flat with a small circular hole drilled through it about half way down its length. The button is 18.6mm long including the loop, 9.0 excluding it, 11.1mm in diameter and weighs 3.66g. Post Medieval gold finger ring (posy ring), D shaped in section with a flat inner side. There is an incised inscription running around about two-thirds of the inside of the hoop. It reads 'Let Christ and we united be', all letters in lower case italics, apart from an initial upper case letter 'L' and the 'C' of Christ. The inscription terminates in a stamped maker's mark, a raised Gothic SM with a high circular pellet between the letters, all in a rectangular recess with rounded corners. Oman (1974, 41) suggests that italic inscriptions generally replaced those of Roman capitals …
