Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval four part cloth seal with two pairs of two disks. The disks are adjacent to each other with the smaller disks of each pair attached together by a rivet from one which is pushed through the other and pressed flat. The larger disks were probably joined by a tab opposite the rivetted disks but this is now missing. The small disks appear plain although there is a raised circle on the side where the rivet is squashed, the circle is irregular inside and may have had a desgin or it may simply be the result of flattening the rivet. One larger disk has the inscription *TAVNTON en…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Post Medieval cast copper alloy fitting, probably from a strap or possibly a sword belt of 17th to 19th century date. The fitting has a rectangular loop and projecting at tight angles to the loop from one of the longer sides is a elongated tab. The tab is D shaped in section with a flat back and convex front. In plan it is broadly the shape of a circle above a pointed oval, ending in a rounded point. It is heavily corroded but there is extensive traces of tinning on the outer faces. The back of the loop (ie the edge opposite the tab) is twisted. The loop is 21.9mm by 13.9mm externally…

Post medieval silver sixpence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), initial mark hand, dated 1591 on coin, North 2015. The coin appears pitted and in places the silver surface seems to have almost peeled away leaving a blacker, base silver centre exposed. This may be the effect of corrosion on a coin naturally surface enriched through striking or may indicate it is a contemporary copy which has been delibreately plated or surface enriched. The design is, in some places, a bit crude but as these coins were produced in large numbers that is also not uncommon on genuine coins particular as dies …

Post medieval contemporary copy of a shilling of Charles I (1625-1649). The reverse and initial mark, (R), suggest it is copying a Group F coin dating to 1644-1645 AD. However the obverse portrait appears closer to goup D which was not used with this reverse design and the crude indented lines at the front of the robe do not fall as they would on the real design and also suggest a copy. The coin appears to has a silver enriched surface which has worn away from the more base silver core. This could be achieved by making a base silver flan then leaching the copper from the surface usi…
