Post medieval contemporary copy of a shilling of Charles I (1625-1649). The reverse and initial mark, (R), suggest it is copying a Group F coin dating to 1644-1645 AD. However the obverse portrait appears closer to goup D which was not used with this reverse design and the crude indented lines at the front of the robe do not fall as they would on the real design and also suggest a copy. The coin appears to has a silver enriched surface which has worn away from the more base silver core. This could be achieved by making a base silver flan then leaching the copper from the surface usi…

Post medieval silver sixpence, probably of William III (1694-1702), date unclear. The coin has been bent in two places into an S-shape in profile. Coins treated in this way are commonly believed to have been given as love tokens. The design is completely worn on both sides but it is not clear if this is due to natural circulation wear or part of the deliberate modification.

Clipping from the edge of a Post Medieval silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649), Group F, star initial mark, AD 1640-1641, minted at London, North (1991:160) no.2231. The clipping is to the inner circle including the entire legend and appears to be about 90% of the edge. The clipping is extreme and would obviously be noticable on the coin. It may have been done to turn the coin into a medallion or to make profit from the coin. When coins were called in for the recoinage of William III in 1696 they accepted any coin which was not clipped to within the inner circle suggesting many…

Post medieval silver shilling of William III (1694-1702), unclear bust, harp and crowns, unclear date, AD 1695-1700, minted at London. One edge of the coin has been bent up and the other down to create an S-shaped profile, one edge was then straightened. Coins modified in this way are often referred to as 'love tokens'. Although as it has been straightened this coin could also have been returned to the general money supply.

Post Medieval silver shilling of Elizabeth I dating to AD 1587 to 1590. Escallop initial mark on the obverse, crescent stamped over escallop on the reverse. North (1991: 136) no.2014. It is interesting to see the initial mark overstamped on the die, this is not uncommon for dates on those denominations that have them, but it seems rarer with initial marks.
