Clipping from the edge of a Post Medieval silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649), Group F, star initial mark, AD 1640-1641, minted at London, North (1991:160) no.2231. The clipping is to the inner circle including the entire legend and appears to be about 90% of the edge. The clipping is extreme and would obviously be noticable on the coin. Post medieval contemporary copy of a shilling of Charles I (1625-1649). The reverse and initial mark, (R), suggest it is copying a Group F coin dating to 1644-1645 AD. However the obverse portrait appears closer to goup D which was not used with this reverse design and the crude indented lines at the front of the robe do not fall as they would on the real design and also suggest a copy. The coin appears to has a silver enriched surface which has worn away from the more base silver core. This could be achieved by making a base silver flan then leaching the copper from the surface usi…
