Part of the side of a late Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy cauldron. The piece has a horizontal raised wire (rib) running across it above this part of a scratched makers mark. Only part of the mark is visible but it may be a crude multi-pointed star. The inner and outer side are both smooth with no signs of sooting. It is 40.4 mm by 39.9mm and 2.6mm thick, excluding the rib, 3.6mm including it. It weighs 19.30 grams. Butler and Green (2003:148) illustrate a complete cauldron with a possibly similar scratch mark above the wire, no.153. They suggest a date around 150…

A cast copper alloy foot and part of a leg from a Medieval or Post Medieval vessel. The leg is broadly D-shaped in cross section with convex curved front and flat back. There are three narrow ribs running down the length of the front and onto the foot. It measures 39.1mm in height, 26.3mm in width, 22.8mm in thickness and weighs 120g For a similar, more complete example see SOM-6F6813. Butler, Green and Payne (2009, pg 4) suggest that this form (type a) was widespread in the Medieval period, but examples are known into the early 17th century.

Unglazed ceramic foot from a tripod pipkin or chafing dish of probable 13th to 14th century date. The fabric is mid grey with pale orange oxidised patches through out. It has abundent (c.20%) fine quartz temper with very sparse fine iron oxide inclusions. The leg is broadly oval in section with a flattened, angled base. It widens and thickens towards the top. It is formed of a flattened piece of clay with the join where the sides were rolled together visible on the inner side. As the leg expands this joint angles aware leaving a C-shaped section with a indent on the back to thin the u…

Rim fragment from a lead-tin alloy (pewter) vessel, possibly a large dish of the later 15th to 18th centuries although an earlier date cannot be ruled out. The rim was probably originally flat, although it is now bent, with a thickened, rounded border on the top (beaded), rim type 2a. It is esitmated to have been c.380mm in original diameter if it was circular and just under 5% survives. It weighs 26.39 grams and is 2.6mm thick.

Handle sherd of North Devon grit ware (gravel tempered ware) of c.1600-1850 AD. Mid orange fabric with reduced areas and patches of reduced surface surviving. Abundent (c.30%) poorly sorted angular quartz inclusions up to 0.8mm across (coarse sand). The patches of reduced surface suggest it may have been glazed. The handle is 17.5mm across by 8.5mm thick and has an indent running down the front. It is very surved and probably came from the neck of a jar. 5.51g. Abraded edges and surface, the weathering has removed coarse grains from the surface leaving it pitted.

Rectangular piece of copper alloy sheet with six regularly spaced rectangular slots around the edge. One slot, in a corner, still contains a copper alloy sheet rivet. It is 57.0mm by 30.2mm by 1.8mm and weighs 6.35 grams. This piece is a vessel repair, probably from a copper alloy vessel. The use of sheet rivets suggest a Medieval to Post Medieval date, c.1450-1700 AD. See SUR-F333C2 and SUSS-881300 on this database for similar repairs still attached to parts of a vessel.
