Description: A sheet silver thimble made in two pieces, dating from the c. late 17th-early 18th century AD. The thimble has a high domed top and originally slightly sloping sides, now squashed in places. The top was made separately from the body and they were soldered together, this solder has now cracked, and they were detached when found. There is also a partially cracked seam running down the body which again has been mended by the finder, who was unaware of the thimbles age. The upper part of the body and top are covered in abutting slightly irregular rows of raised rings sepa…

A copper alloy domed thimble of Post Medieval date with angled sides and a slightly domed top. The thimble has circular indentations (pits) arranged in a regular right-hand spiral from the crown on the top with no tonsure and similar indentations arranged in a spiral around the sides, very worn at the upper part. The lower edge is slightly irregular and damaged but there is an incised line running parallel to and above it in the plain area below the spiral. The thimble is worn and corroded, so while there is no clear makers mark there may have been one. The thimble measures 22.2mm in …

Copper alloy open type thimble or 'sewing ring' of late Medieval or early Post Medieval date. The sides are splayed and the base is wider than the top. The ring has fairly regularly spaced stamped oval pits arranged in four rows around the sides. There is no evidence of a makers mark but it is badly corroded. It is 19.4mm by 17.2mm at the base and 1.6mm thick; it weighs 4.0 grams. The splayed sides allow an easier fit on the finger and is also chronologically diagnostic to the late Medieval or Post Medieval periods (Holmes 1988: 3). It is similar to Holmes (ibid) fig. 4 dated to c.1…
