Modified Post Medieval silver half groat of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) dating to the years AD 1591 to 1594. Initial mark tun. Minted at London. North (1991:137) no.2016. The coin has been bent at right angles at two places, one near each edge, givng it as S-shape in profile. This modification is often descibed as a 'love token' although they had wider uses as charms including for good luck.

Post Medieval silver twopence (halfgroat) of the Commonwealth (1649-1660), minted at London, AD 1649-1660, North (1991:206) no. 2728. The coin has been bent in two places to give it an S-shaped profile. It has also been pierced twice, at 12 and 5 on the obverse. The piercings are circular and half way between the edge and centre. The burrs around the edge and distortion suggest the upper hole has been pierced from the back and the lower from the front, possibly suggesting they were done together after the coin was folded. there is a small tear between the lower hole and the edge. …
