This modification is often descibed as a 'love token' although they had wider uses as charms including for good luck.

The coin has been bent in two places to give it an S-shaped profile. It has also been pierced twice, at 12 and 5 on the obverse. The piercings are circular and half way between the edge and centre. The burrs around the edge and distortion suggest the upper hole has been pierced from the back and the lower from the front, possibly suggesting they were done together after the coin was folded. there is a small tear between the lower hole and the edge. …

The circular hole goes through nearer the centre than the edge at 9 o'clock on obverse abnd 6 o'clock on th reverse. The coin has also been bent twise to give an S-shaped profile. Coins bent in this way are often called 'love tokens' but are probably more general good luck charms.
