Clipping from the edge of a Post Medieval silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649), Group F, star initial mark, AD 1640-1641, minted at London, North (1991:160) no.2231. The clipping is to the inner circle including the entire legend and appears to be about 90% of the edge. The clipping is extreme and would obviously be noticable on the coin. It may have been done to turn the coin into a medallion or to make profit from the coin. When coins were called in for the recoinage of William III in 1696 they accepted any coin which was not clipped to within the inner circle suggesting many…

One edge of the coin has been bent up and the other down to create an S-shaped profile, one edge was then straightened. Coins modified in this way are often referred to as 'love tokens'. Although as it has been straightened this coin could also have been returned to the general money supply.

The coin is pierced with a round hole drilled through, probably from the reverse, leaving a raised edge on both sides. The hole is near the edge and at 7 o'clock on the obverse and 2 o'clock on the reverse.
