Silver spherical bell. The bell is formed of upper and lower hemispheres soldered or brazed together in a raised join around the centre. The upper hemisphere is plain with a silver loop soldered to the centre. The bodkin is needle shaped in plan, ie it has a round ended widened and flattened head below which the needle is circular in cross section and fairly straight sided for approximately four fifths of its length before ending in an elaborate terminal.  The terminal which consists of a series of five knops: two plain narrow collar like knops, a third narrow knop with diagonal incised lines in a wrythen pattern then a larger oval knop then a smaller final globular terminal. Post Medieval silver sixpence of William III (1694-1702), dated 1697 on coin, minted at London. Opposing sides of the coin have been bent to give it an S shape in profile, coins modified in this way, especially those worn smooth are thought to be love tokens. The bends have been straightened but it is not clear if this was contemporary or more recent.
