The coin has been pieced at 2 o'clock on the obverse, 5 o'clock on reverse, near the edge with a circular hole drilled from both sides (raised metal both faces). The position on the obvese avoids the kings head. The coin is also bent but it is not clear if this is deliberate.

Clipping from the edge of a Post Medieval silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649), Group F, star initial mark, AD 1640-1641, minted at London, North (1991:160) no.2231. The clipping is to the inner circle including the entire legend and appears to be about 90% of the edge. The clipping is extreme and would obviously be noticable on the coin. It may have been done to turn the coin into a medallion or to make profit from the coin. The coin is pierced with a square (nail) hole near the edge at 10 o'clock on the obverse and 8 o'clock on the reverse. It was pierced from the obverse. It is also bent and may have been bent in the s-shape (one edge bent forward and the opposite edge bent back). This S-shaped bend is common on coins of this period and often interpreted as making the coin a 'love token'.
