Corroded copper-alloy mount, roughly in the shape of a heart with a long knop projecting from the centre of the wider end and a lozengiform terminal at the narrower end. It is slightly convex, and on the reverse has the stubs of two bent-over attachment spikes. It has corroded to a matt pale green over a matt brown.

Almost-square copper-alloy mount, measuring 19 x 20 mm. It has relief decoration; in the centre is a flat-topped raised disc from which four large leaf shapes radiate, one to each corner. In between the leaf shapes are pairs of slightly unclear blobs. Around is a border of small pellets, and then an outer border of larger pellets around which the edge is decoratively shaped. The corner and centre pellets on each side are particularly large. On the reverse are the stubs of two attachment spikes.

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
One D-shaped loop from a very large double-looped buckle frame, 49 mm wide. The bar is missing, but on one end a moulding survives which probably bordered the bar. The corners are rounded, more sharply on the exterior than on the interior. At the centre of the outer edge is a large relief acorn motif flanked by a pair of mouldings. The acorn is quite squat, with a cross-hatched cup and a knopped kernel. The reverse of both the acorn and the rest of the frame are slightly hollowed. There are traces of what looks like gilding, but these are confined to the highest parts of the buck…

Russian bale seal, an oval lead disc measuring 20 x 23 mm. Two holes for ties are clearly visible running through the thickness of the seal along its short axis. The seal has been crimped together by the use of obverse and reverse dies which bear lettering. The dies are not oriented; on the obverse, the lettering runs parallel to the holes rather than perpendicular to them, and on the reverse the lettering runs at about 45 degrees to the holes. On the obverse, the lettering is in Cyrillic; a transcription by John Sullivan can be seen on the scan and the Latin equivalent is something…

Russian bale seal made from lead, an oval measuring 20 x 23 mm. Two holes for ties are clearly visible running through the thickness of the seal along its short axis. The seal has been crimped together by the use of obverse and reverse dies which bear lettering. Unusually, however, the dies are not oriented properly. On the obverse, the lettering runs parallel to the holes rather than perpendicular to them, and on the reverse the lettering runs at about 45 degrees to the holes and is partly off the seal. On the obverse, the top line has perhaps a single illegible initial. The sec…

Copper-alloy seal matrix. The die is oval and measures 13 x 14 mm. On the reverse a low cone rises to a handle which expands and flattens to accommodate a transverse line of three circular perforations, then tapers again to a single larger circular perforation at the top. The handle is now slightly bent. The die is engraved with 16 radiating lines; four longer lines form a cross, and in each quarter is a pair of shorter lines flanking a wavy line. Length as bent, 24 mm. Post-medieval, probably 16th or 17th century.

Double-looped buckle frame, one loop D-shaped and one rectangular. The frame is flat and decorated all around. At each end of the bar is a relief rosette, then the rectangular loop is covered with oblique grooves. The D-shaped loop has a couple of oblique grooves near to the bar, and then has a pair of relief scrolls. At the pin rest is a larger relief rosette. All three rosettes need expanded lobes to accommodate them. An unusual buckle, and probably late 16th or early 17th century.

Well-preserved book clasp. The upper plate is made from a single sheet of copper alloy with the narrower end turned over into a hook. Next to the hook are two rectangular projections, and then the clasp flares gently for about three-quarters of its length. The final quarter has a steeper concave curve out to an attachment end cut into decorative outcurving scallops, and here one corner is missing. The upper plate is corroded to a powdery pale green over a rough reddish interior, but much of the decoration can still be seen. There is a line of zig-zag engraving between the two rect…

Solid copper-alloy end-cap from a knife handle. An oval 12.5 x 11 mm in cross-section, it has an engraved six-point star on one end. The other end has extensive traces of the rectangular-section iron tang of the knife. The end-cap is 13 mm long, and has on each face an engraved saltire between two transverse lines, one at each end. The top and bottom each have a pair of longitudinal engraved lines. The total length of the object, with the fragment of iron tang, is 18 mm.

Long copper-alloy hook with decorative front which is now incomplete. The decorative front survives to 37.5 mm long, and consists of a relief shell motif set longitudinally at one end, with a curving branch-like element extending from its base and linking it to the side of a larger shell motif set transversely. The stub of a second branch-like element emerges from the other side of the larger shell but is then broken. The hook emerges from the reverse of the smaller shell and curves round to nearly meet the decorative front. The hook appears to be complete, with a squared-off end g

Incomplete gilded copper-alloy mount, with relief openwork decoration. The design is a loose knot of strands around what may be a central flower, and there are two bent-over attachment spikes on the reverse. The mount is now bent and the breaks are fairly worn. The metal has corroded to a brown patina with patches of green. The mount is bigger than most 16th-century examples, with a surviving length of 40 mm and width of 29 mm.

Small and mis-cast openwork copper-alloy hooked tag. The basic type has the plate formed from a C-shaped scroll with solid circular ends. There is a rectangular loop at the top which springs from the ends of the scroll, and at the bottom there is firstly a horizontal bar on which the scroll rests and then a hook with two small lateral projections at the top. The hook is triangular in cross-section, and is sharp and complete. On this example, however, mis-casting has produced a partial blocking not only of the scroll but also of the rectangular loop. The space left within the loop i…

Sword-belt fitting consisting of a highly domed oval plate with a terminal at either end. The upper terminal is rounded, pierced and knopped and there is a transverse moulding between it and the oval dome. The dome has five longitudinal facets and a hollow reverse. There is a larger transverse moulding at the opposite end, which is decorated with a broad groove and which has an integrally cast rivet on the reverse. Below is a hook which has been bent until it forms a closed loop. This fitting would probably have been worn mounted on the belt, with a similar hooked fitting attached…
