A fragment of a silver post-medieval shilling of Edward VI (1547-1553), unclear mint, 1549-1550 (North 1918/1-1925). The cutting and rolling were deliberate and may have been an attempt to mutilate the coin. Edward VI's reign was marked by social unrest…

A silver post-medieval sixpence of William III (1694-1702), unclear mint, 1695-1700. The coin is very worn and is bent. The coin appears to have been bent twice, but is now partially straightened, possibly by the finder or as a result of movement within the ploughsoil. Coins with a double bend are sometimes referred to as love tokens but they may have been used for supposed amuletic properties. Manville (2014, p. 20) says of bent coins: “A twice bent coin might be carried in the pocket or wallet as a protection against the ‘evil eye’ or other witchcraft, hence the crooked sixpen…

All 'pine tree' issues show the date 1652 owing to the fact that the colony understood it had no rights to mint coinage, perhaps wanting to create the illusion it only minted during the period immediately after the Civil War (Newman 1973, 101-2; Sylla 1982, 24).

A silver post-medieval sixpence of William III (AD 1694-1702). Uncertain mint (AD 1696-1700; Spink 3531-7 or 3542-8). This coin is very worn and has a rough double bend, which could indicate this coin was used as a love token or lucky coin (although the bends form a C-shape rather than the usual S-shape).
