Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame, missing most of one of its loops as well as its pin. The pin bar extends beyond the sides in thin lobes, with recesses to each side which emphasise them. The reverse and upper surfaces are flat, and the frame bevelled internally and externally on the upper surface, giving it a semicircular cross-section. On the front of the outer edge of the extant loop is a centrally located eight petalled rosette. The buckle has a dark-green patina. Length: 25.9mm; Width: 28.4mm; Thickness: 2.1mm; Weight: 3.13g Suc…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle dating to the period c. 1550-1650. The buckle is D-shaped in form, having lost a loop, and in cross-section. It has a circular knop at the centre of the outer edge of the surviving loop, possibly with small decorative radial moulded ridges, now unclear. The pin bar has a small, pointed moulded knop at either end. The pin consists of a separate copper-alloy thick sheet which has been bent around the pin bar. This has corroded to a light-green colour, compared to the dark-brown of the frame, and may represent a repair; the lo…

A post-medieval copper-alloy uniface strap mount in the form of an acorn (c. 17th century). On the front the cup is delineated from the nut by a transverse grooved low ridge. At the cup's base the acorn has a small rounded knop. The upper surface of the cup may have been decorated with cross-hatching but any decoration appears to have been worn away over time. The front is shallowly convex; the reverse is hollowed. The reverse features a pair of small integral lugs arranged longitudinally towards each end of the mount; one is broadly central, the other more off centre. They have been …

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval copper-alloy square coin weight possibly for a half ('spur') ryal of James I, tariffed at XVIs, VId, indicating it related to coins of the revalued 2nd coinage, dating to 1612-1619. One side seemingly depicts a spur with central rose; the other a mark of value with a crown above: the 's' denoting shilling might be discernible. These weights were replaced by round ones with similar designs post-1632 (Withers and Withers 1995, 38). Highly corroded, the coin weight measures 15.2mm by 14.9mm, 3.8mm thick and weighs 5.32 grams (81.94 grains).

A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy leg and foot from a later medieval to post-medieval cooking vessel. The object is splayed at the base in a simple, out-turned, pad-like foot of now sub-oval cross-section, significantly worn at both front corners, and probably abraded at the reverse corners. The front of the foot and the leg are faceted around the central longitudinal plane, giving the fragment a five-sided cross-section, with flat reverse. The long sides of the leg appear to be heavily abraded. The break where the leg would have joined the body of the vessel is old. The fl…

A complete copper-alloy dress hook dating to the post-medieval period (c. 16th century). The body is sub-rectangular, with two large attachment holes uppermost, when the hook is orientated down. The plate features a broad transverse groove with a moulded ridge above, between this and the holes, and another ridge below. The ridges are decorated with a cabled pattern, that is, diagonal ridges. Below the lowermost ridge is a pair of pointed knops, either side of the hook. The knops sit either side of curved cut-outs that echo the attachment holes above. The hook itself curves round on it…

An incomplete copper-alloy early post-medieval toggle clasp. The main body of the clasp is a convex oval shape with hollow reverse. At one end there is a transverse ridge dividing the main body from a rounded terminal element with knop. This latter retains traces of a rivet, with orange corrosion product on both faces suggesting the rivet was made of iron. A similar rivet hole with corroded rivet is located at the base of the main body. Below this is a double transverse ridge beyond which the object is rebated and narrowed, but soon truncated. The artefact is similar to an early po…

The leg and foot from a post-medieval cast copper-alloy cooking vessel, probably a cauldron. The foot is triangular in cross-section with a slightly convex back and slight ridge down the centre of the front. The end of the leg is very worn and rounded, which may be the result of use wear. Retained at the top of the leg is the curved inner surface of the vessel itself, with worn edges at the breaks. It is 56.7mm long, up to 29.5mm wide and up to 17.8mm thick; it weigh 98.86 grams. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.1100-1800 for serving and cooking. Butle…

A worn and probably miscast copper-alloy vessel fragment of medieval or post-medieval date. The piece is T-shaped in cross-section with an irregularly shaped slightly uneven 'base' which is slightly concave from end to end. This base appears to have very worn breaks around all the edges. From the probable outer side projects up a rectangular extension, 43.8mm wide, at right angles to the 'base'. This extension is flat, slightly curved when viewed from above and appears smoother on one side and irregular on the other, the outer edge (opposite the base) is irregular but rounded suggesti…
