An incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle probably of post-medieval date. The buckle was formed of a pair of oval loops; one has been lost to an old break at the junction of frame and pin bar. The extant loop has an effectively flat reverse, with possible central concavity from the casting process. The front is bevelled both externally and internally, the latter more steeply. There are hints of very small protrusions at each end of the pin bar. A thick sheet copper-alloy pin is still attached.  Measurements: 15 mm in length, 22 mm in width and 2.35 …

A cast, copper-alloy post-medieval asymmetrical buckle dating to c. 1575-1700, incomplete insofar as it is missing its pin. One loop is broadly rectangular and the other loop is D-shaped. The inside of the D-shape loop has a pointed protrusion which could be where the pin rested. The pin bar is notably narrow, though the frame overall has suffered from corrosion, depriving us of much of the original surface and thus any decoration. The reverse of the buckle is flat. Measurements: 38.5 mm in length, up to 26.5 mm in width and 3.78 g in weight. See W…

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame dating to the post-medieval period (c. 16th century), incomplete insofar as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of a pair of shallow oval loops either aide of a narrowed bar which has low, moulded knops either end. The outer edge is enlarged to accommodate a moulded rosette, with defined petals. The front of the frame is bevelled both externally and internally, and the reverse is flat forming a broadly trapezoidal cross-section. As well as the pin being absent, in profile, one of the buckle's …

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame dating to the post-medieval period (c. AD 1525-1600), incomplete insofar as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two oval loops with lobed knops at two symmetrical points on each outer edge. The central pin bar has a knop on each end. The frame is undecorated with broadly trapezoidal cross-section formed of external and internal bevelling on the front and a flat reverse. Patches of a dark, possibly lacquer, coating have been retained on the surface. Measurements: 33 mm in length, 20 mm&nbs…

A slightly bent cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle dating to c. AD 1550-1650 - incomplete, but only insofar as it is missing its pin. The frame comprises of two broadly D-shaped loops divided by a central bar; the former are plano-convex in cross section, with a sub-triangular sectioned bar. A trilobed flange, each lobe defined by engraved grooves, extends from outer edge of either frame, with a further pair flanking the bar. Measurements: 46.5 mm in length, 29 mm in width and 2 mm in thickness of the frame. The weight is 6.74 g. This buckl…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped oval buckle frame of post-medieval date (c. 1550-1650), of which only around one half of the frame (loop) and bar survives, with the pin also missing. The frame has a moulded pin rest formed of a low double transverse central ridge, flanked by grooves, and lobed knop at either end of the bar. The bar is slightly narrowed. The frame has a D-shaped cross-section with the reverse being flat. The object has a pitted olive green surface. A copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date, complete with pin. It measures 28.8mm by 23.4mm by 3.3mm and weighs 6.63g. The loops are oval and are bevelled externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat with some steep internal bevelling. At both ends of the pin bar is a thin moulded knop. The pin bar is recessed. Around it a pin of thick sheet folded construction survives in place. The buckle is of a dull red-brown colour. The loops have been angled upwards, possibly through use rather than damage. For comparable buckles see Whitehead (1996, 54); they are co…

A copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame of asymmetrical form. One loop is trapezoidal while the other is D-shaped. The former has a central pin rest and rebated outer edge. The D-shaped loop is similarly rebated on its outer edge and features a central rounded protrusion internally. Overall the front of the frame is bevelled shallowly from the internal edge to the external. The pin is missing; traces of ferrous corrosion product towards the centre of the pin bar suggest that it would have been made of iron. The buckle is angled in profile, probably from use rather than…

A post-medieval copper-alloy shoe or knee buckle with separate pin and stud chape, the latter broken through its loop. The frame of the buckle is symmetrical, comprising two D-shaped loops that form a continuous oval frame. These have shallow curved internal expansions along each short edge. An incomplete copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle dating to the period c. 1550-1650. The buckle is D-shaped in form, having lost a loop, and in cross-section. It has a circular knop at the centre of the outer edge of the surviving loop, possibly with small decorative radial moulded ridges, now unclear. The pin bar has a small, pointed moulded knop at either end. The pin consists of a separate copper-alloy thick sheet which has been bent around the pin bar. This has corroded to a light-green colour, compared to the dark-brown of the frame, and may represent a repair; the lo…

A copper-alloy single-looped sub-rectangular buckle of post-medieval date. The strap bar is narrowed and recessed on all sides; the frame protrudes slightly beyond the strap bar at either end. These protrusions are also expanded and are developed, thickening to rounded ends. The bar is circular in cross-section. From the pin bar (W.: 23.0mm) the buckle narrows to a slight waist (W.: 21.8mm) before expanding slightly towards the outer edge. A post-medieval copper-alloy rectangular double-looped buckle frame. The frame is rectangular and continuous; the two loops are created due to the pin bar which is narrowed. On the front its edges are bevelled both internally and externally. The pin bar is thus trapezoidal in cross-section; the pin is missing. The frame has been twisted after deposition with one corner of one loop bent upwards and the other corner of the same loop downwards. A similar buckle, slightly larger, can be found illustrated in Whitehead (2003, 74; no. 458) where a late 16th- to 17th-century date is sugges…

A medieval to post-medieval copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame incomplete only in so far as it is missing its pin. It is formed of two conjoined oval loops. The loops are bevelled externally on the upper surface, bevelling echoed internally on the reverse. The central bar pin bar is narrowed and triangular in cross-section which is 2.4mm thick. The outer edges of the loops have 'cusped' (or 'serrated') outer edges. Each loop has four filed grooves at the centre of moulded bifid knops, giving the outer edge of the loop its cusped appearance; the gaps between the central knops act …

A corroded and bent asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. This example is incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. One loop of the buckle is D-shaped, the other is sub-rectangular. The former features a centrally protruding moulded knop on its outer edge. The lower surface of the buckle is flat and undecorated. By contrast, the upper surface features moulded decoration, now indistinct due to the corrosion product. This latter is an off-white colour, over a metal that is dark grey.
