Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small cannon ball of probable post-medieval (English Civil War) date (1600-1700AD) The cannonball is spherical with a diameter of 44.1mm. It weighs 351 grams (12.25 ozs). It has been made in iron which has been presumably cast. There is a small linear ridge running around part of the ball, which might be the remains of the casting flange. The ball is of a mid-brown orange colour with small areas of slight flaking and active corrosion. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition and with no obvious dents or grazes which might suggest use. The size is slightly odd and may…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire

It is likely that this token came from the open stone mould described in record HESH-E487F2. A number of these were found with the mould (HESH-E5ECA0, HESH-E61942, HESH-E639B8, HESH-E651C8, HESH-E65DF2, HESH-E67611). Also found with these items was some lead waste (HESH-0A0041)and a large lead cannon ball (HESH-0A8EC3). This group could be interpreted as a metalworkers or token makers assemblage with both used (and recycled) tokens as well as a large amount of lead awaiting to be melted down. Similar tokens are often found and are dated to the post-medieval periods (1500 - 1700 AD).
