A complete clear glass intaglio of Post-Medieval date. The intaglio is ovate in plan and D-shaped in section. It is engraved with the image of a crowned heart flanked by feathers or leaves. The intaglio is 8.6mm long, 7.6mm wide, 1.7mm thick and weighs 0.2g. Cufflinks and buttons with the design of a crowned heart are considered to have originally been produced to commemorate the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662, but continued to be used as a general symbol of love and marriage until the end of the century. A similar date is likely for this object.

A piece of window glass of Post-Medieval date. The piece is broadly a parallelogram in plan with a narrow rectangular section. The surface of the glass is degraded in a manner similar to that seen on plant ash glasses of the medieval to post-medieval periods, likely caused by general weathering. Finds Advisor Kevin Leahy states that the regular edges appear diamond cut rather than crozed as would be typical of earlier pieces. There are also no signs of fire rounding present. It is therefore likely that this piece dates to the late post-medieval period. The glass fragment is 23.…

A sherd of a glass vessel of post-medieval date. The sherd is a small translucent blue glass fragment which appears yellowish-green when held up to the light. Some small air bubbles appear within this shard along with a vein of white running through it and traces of possible burning to one end. The sherd is 18.9mm long, 13.7mm wide, 4.2mm thick and weighs 1.4g. Jennifer Price, Emeritus Professor at Durham University, states that the sherd is likely to be from a post-medieval wine bottle. Dr Birgitta Hoffmann, University of Liverpool, states that such fragments are very common it…

A complete glass linen smoother of post-medieval date. The linen smoother is made of a black glass and is circular in plan with a sub-D-shaped section, being convex on one face and slightly flattened with a concave central element on the opposite. Within the circular depression is a broken knob which represents the remains of the handle and would have been formed as the smoother was separated from the maker's glass rod. The surface of the glass is patchy iridescent and is heavily abraded with a large flake chipped from one edge. Glass linen smoothers are known to have been in us…

A glass intaglio of post-medieval date. The intaglio is an opaque white colour, oval in plan and set within a copper alloy mount. The mount is slightly larger than the intaglio and tapers from the front to the back, extending slightly past the reverse of the glass. The front face of the intaglio depicts a left facing head wearing a laureate wreath in the neo-Classical style while the reverse is flat and undecorated. The object is 20.3mm long, 17.6mm wide, 4.9mm thick and weighs 3.8g. Although the figure depicted on this intaglio appears Roman it is unlikely that this object is of…
