Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A copper-alloy post-medieval strap-fitting dating from the Post-Medieval period, AD 1500 - 1700. The mount is sub-triangular in plan. At the upper edge of the mount are three knops protruding from the upper edge. These are slightly flattened and damaged, presumed in antiquity. On the reverse there are a pair of lugs, these have been folded toward each other to form a fastening. Read (2001) illustrates similar examples on page 35 fig 20. He dates these mounts with in…

An incomplete Post-Medieval copper-alloy strap mount with suspension loop and separate pendent hooked fitting. The strap fitting is probably from a sword belt and dates to the 16th century.
The strap mount is a flat piece of copper alloy that is broadly rectangular in plan with curved upper and lower edges. The outer edge of the mount is double cusped, the plate is then waisted after which it broadens and then tapers again to a broken edge. Other examples illustrate this is the point that the fitting may have then extended to comprise of further suspension loops. Possibly two furth…
