An incomplete cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular buckle of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1660-1720. Only one corner survives, with part of the leading edge and part of one side arm of the frame. No evidence for a surface coating is present.
The two side arms would have expanded, from a flattened 'D' shaped cross-section at the frame's corners, in width (maximum 4.6mm) and thickness (maximum 3.6mm) to accommodate a drilled frame for a, now missing, separate spindle. The frame has an oval cross-section over the drilled aperture. The drilled frame has a circular aperture of c.…

A Post-Medieval buckle frame, pin missing, dating to c.AD 1620-1680. This is a form of buckle described by Whitehead, R. as a double loop trapezoidal buckle with moulded decoration on the loops. See Whitehead, R. 2003, p.84.
This buckle frame weighs 6.28g, has a length of 26.9mm, maximum width of 38.7mm and thickness of 2.5mm. The frame's cross-section is trapezoidal being slightly greater in measurement on the reverse surface than the front. The central integral pin-bar measures 2.4mm on the length axis. The narrower end of the frame has four lobes on the external edge. Thes…

A Post-Medieval buckle frame dating to c. AD 1575-1700. This artefact weighs 1.37g, has a maximum length of 23.6mm, maximum width of 15.2mm and maximum thickness of 1.8mm.
The frame is a double loop asymmetrical buckle with moulded decoration. The frame has a width across the central bar of 12.9mm. The upper surface of the frame has a subtle narrow decorative ridge. The original cross-section shape of the central bar is uncertain due to corrosion and slight surface damage but currently has a maximum width of c.1.5mm. To one side of the central bar the frame is trapezoidal, the arms of…

A Post-Medieval copper-alloy buckle chape dating to c. AD 1660-1800. This would have been a stud chape from a two-piece buckle, however, the stud is now missing from the distal end of the chape. The chape weighs 3.03g and has a total length of 33.1mm. The proximal end is the widest part of the chape measuring 17.1mm over the bifid cylindrical hinge. The hinge cylinder has an external diameter of 3.2mm and internal diameter of 1.8mm. The bifid notch accounts for 5.0mm of the maximum width dimension and its depth accounts for 3.6mm of the chape's total length. A separate, now missing, s…

The remains of a Post-Medieval incomplete copper-alloy two-piece buckle frame. This buckle would have had an oval to circular shape and dates to the c. 18th century AD.
Only about half of the frame survives, the rest along with the separate pin-bar and pin having been lost. This fragment of the original artefact weighs 8.71g. The frame has an incomplete length of 41.1mm and incomplete width of 40.1mm however the width axis arm of the frame has been pulled out of its original alignment. It is not certain whether this distortion occurred at the time of the object's break or post-depo…

The remains of a Post-Medieval incomplete copper-alloy two-piece buckle frame. This buckle frame would have had a sub-rectangular veering to oval shape, the internal and external corners being smoothly curved, and dates to the c. 18th century AD.
Only half of the frame survives the rest, along with the separate pin-bar and pin, having been lost. This fragment of the original artefact weighs 9.93g. The frame has broken across the drilled holes that would originally have held an iron pin bar across the centre of the width axis of the frame. These drilled holes, originally positioned …

An incomplete copper-alloy composite shoe buckle of Georgian date c. AD 1750-1800. Only part of the buckle's frame, just over one quarter, survives. This fragment weighs 8.26g.
The frame has a sub-rectangular to sub-oval cross-section (the corners and edges slightly convexly curved from a precise rectangle). The frame cross-section has a width of 4.8mm and thickness of 3.6mm at the single surviving frame corner. The frame expands to a width of 5.5mm and thickness of 5.3mm over a circular aperture of 1.9mm diameter. This aperture is set off-centre through the frame, c.1.1mm in from …

A Post Medieval cast copper alloy snake buckle. It is S-shaped and double-headed. The end terminals each depict a swan's head with a beak and an oval eye. The beak's length is 4mm and that of the eye is 2.3mm. There is a strap design (width: 4.2mm) in the centre, towards which the two heads are both turning. On the front and back there are two defined transverse lines (width:1.4mm). These are in low relief and mark the borders of the central field of the strap design. Due to either wear or mould design the lines briefly disappear at each edge. A triple foliate design extends longitudi…

A cast copper-alloy double loop oval buckle weighing 12.08g (0.43oz). This artefact is post medieval with a probable date range of c1550-1650. The buckle is 46.2mm in length and 28.5mm wide. The flat, openwork frame is vesica-shaped (pointed oval shaped) with a beaded outside edge scrolling over the side. The double loops have a bevelled inside edge. There are protrusions either end of the narrowed strap bar with a circular hole at either end. There is also a circular hole in the inner edge of each loop behind the beaded edge of the frame. These four holes have bevelled sides. The com…

Description: An incomplete moulded copper-alloy buckle of earlier Post-Medieval date c. AD1550-1650. This buckle would originally have had a double sub-oval looped frame with central vertical strap bar. However, a break has occurred just past the strap bar leaving one complete loop and two short projections of the remains of a mostly missing loop.
The strap-bar has a sub-trapezoidal cross-section, with a convex curve on the upper surface. The reverse surface is flat and the sides taper from the wider reverse (3.0mm) in to the upper narrower surface (1.8mm). The strap-bar has a thic…

A fragment of copper-alloy two piece buckle frame dating AD c.1660-1800. This fragment weighs 4.47g. The frame has a flattened oval cross-section. The frame expands to the reverse of the frame over the drilled hole, for a separate spindle - now missing, to a maximum width of 5.0mm. The width of the frame arm is 9.5mm at this location, narrowing to 8.7mm with a thickness of 1.5mm as the frame turns at the corner. The frame has a transverse worn break at the corner which suggests that the buckle had a sub-rectangular shape with rounded corners. The break at the other end of the fragment…

A complete copper-alloy 'cooking pot' shaped loop chape from a two piece buckle dating AD c.1660-1720. The chape frame has a rectangular cross-section with single, now worn and rounded tipped, internal spike. This chape weighs 2.63g, has a maximum width of 23.8mm and length of 19.5mm. The chape has a width of 16.8mm over the drilled hole end, which would have attached to the spindle, and the notch for the pin accounts for 4.8mm of this measurement. This buckle frame weighs 5.11g, has a length of c.25.8mm, width of 32.7mm and thickness of 2.1mm. The frame has a sub-oval to 'D' shaped cross-section the reverse surface being flatter than the upper surface and sides. The offset pin and strap bar has been pulled outwards and a now worn break has occured at one end of the offset bar. The three arms of the buckle frame have a width of 4.7mm but the offset bar has a narrower width of 2.7mm with a thickness of 2.1mm. No buckle pi…

An incomplete double loop trapezoidal Post-Medieval buckle, c. AD 1620-1680.
The frame has a trapezoidal cross-section the edges being angled so that the reverse surface of the frame bars are slightly larger than on the upper surface. Above and below the central bar is a slight lobed protrusion. One half of the frame has broken off just to the side of this central bar resulting in the survival of only one loop. The surviving frame end has a trefoil shaped terminal consisting of two lobes and a central triangular projection. It is assumed that the missing loop would have had an iden…
