An incomplete lead or lead alloy artefact of uncertain function and date. Probably an incomplete button of 18th century AD date, of a type often made in silver or cut steel (see Bailey, G. 2004 p.65), or possibly an incomplete late Early-Medieval brooch, such as those recorded in records CAM-BDAF53, KENT-651D7A, LIN-640C24, LVPL-DE8EF6 & CAM-4E4C44 etc. See further discussion below. Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford

A fragment of a lead alloy toy dating to the Post-Medieval period, probably within the AD1600-1700 range. This fragment is the butt end and stock of a toy riffle gun and it weighs 6.98g. It has an incomplete maximum length of 31.4mm and maximum thickness of 4.7mm. The fragment has a pointed-oval cross-section and a sub-triangular shape. One edge, the top edge of the stock, is straight for a length of c.27.3mm before sloping in at an approximate 45 degree angle for c.2.0mm to form the pistol grip. The edge of the artefact then changes angle again creating a right-angled base to the ste…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast Post-Medieval, c.AD1620-1680, trapezoidal double loop buckle. Probably made of a lead alloy, a dark greyish white metal in colour. Little more than half of the buckle's length survives, the frame having broken off just past the central bar. A small knop protrudes from the external edge of the frame above and below the central bar. The horizontal bars (actually set slightly diagonal to help form the trapezoidal shape) of the frame continue past the end of the frame (past the vertical ends of the frame) to form externally projecting ovoid lobes. These lobes are in lin…

Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire

A fragment of the face from a Post-Medieval lead or lead-alloy toy pocket watch. Use of a rim chart indicates that if the outer edge of the clock face is present on the fragment (probably but uncertain) the clock face originally had a diameter of 40.00mm and that the fragment represents between approximately 10% and 15% of the total circumference. Weight 0.98g, thickness is 1.26mm. See PAS records LON-DCCBE3 and NMGW-195EF8 for records of similar artefacts.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A lead or lead-alloy artefact which weights 7.70g, is 59.06mm long and 3.25mm thick. The object has a rounded point 2.95mm wide. The object then slowly increases in width to 7.67mm 39.36mm from the pointed terminal before beginning to flare out forming concave edges to a maximum width of 20.20mm. The object ends with a straight transverse edge at this widest point. This is likely to be a late Post-Medieval by-product of some sort and is unlikey to be a stylus. PAS record SWYOR-26B227 has been created for a similar item since this CAM-E462D3 record.

Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a pewter (leaded copper-alloy) bell of Post-Medieval date. The bell would have been of the conventional bell shape. The fragment weights 11.10g. Use of a rim chart indicates that the bell would have had approximately a 60.00mm diameter and that a quarter (25%) of the rim is present. It is not possible to determine the height of the bell however the fragment has a height of 26.01mm and a maximum thickness of 2.70mm. The bell seems to have been undecorated with the exception of a groove 2.09mm from and parallel to the rim. The groove, which is 1.03mm wide, is followed by a s…
