Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete lead, or lead alloy, button of 18th century AD date, of a type often made in silver or cut steel (see Bailey, G. 2004 p.65). Compare with PAS record CAM-7EE27C, which has almost identical decoration.
This complete object weighs 21.03g. It has a circular shape with diameter of 26.5mm. In profile the button's head has a semi-circular form, convexly domed to the front with a flat reverse. The current maximum thickness over the button is 7.5mm. However, this was originally slightly greater due to damage to the central decorative boss.&n…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead pencil of Post-Medieval date c. AD 1500-1900. Weight is 15.08g, use of a flexible dress-maker’s tape-measure shows the length to be c.63mm. However, in its bent condition it occupies a bent length of 60.4mm. The approximately transverse blunt end has a circular cross-section of 5.8mm diameter and this continues along the length until c.6.2mm from the opposite end at which point the artefact tapers to a, now, blunt point. The flat end of the pencil has a depression, though it is uncertain whether this is intentional or due to later modification or unintentional damage.

A sub-oval veering to sub-rectangular shaped lead palm guard, probably of Post-Medieval date. This artefact weighs 131.10g. It has a length of 54.7mm and width of 46.0mm. It has a smoother convex surface and more irregular concave surface. The edge of the object varies in thickness from 2.4mm to 12.8mm. Over all, over the dished shape this guard occupies a depth, across the centre, of 11.4mm.

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Post-Medieval lead cloth seal. Disc one is the only part of this artefact to survive. As a result of this, it is impossible to determine whether this was originally a two or four disc type of cloth seal. The disc has a width of 31.9mm. The disc increases to give a length axis measurement of 35.8mm when including the remains of the connecting strip.
The outer surface of disc one is covered in relief detail some of which has now completely worn away (unless this was ill-defined when first used). A border formed of closely set pellets, of c.1.0mm diamete…

A lead pencil of probable Post-Medieval date. The pencil is a parallel-sided cylinder of slightly oval cross-section that measures 5.6mm x 4.9mm at the middle, but has a more circular cross-section to either end. It tapers over a length of 2.9mm with irregular width facets to a rounded of point. The opposite end is a flattened convex transverse terminal. The artefact weighs 10.66g and has a maximum length of 50.1mm.

A cast lead shot of late Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The shot is a type referred to as a slug, being sub-cylindrical in shape. The artefact weighs 35.19g and has a length of 19.7mm. The ends have a diameter of 15.4mm and the middle contracts to an hourglass waisted shaped profile of 14.0mm diameter. One end is flattened and the other end has a subtle convexly domed terminal. A casting line can be seen along both sides of the length axis and across both of the terminal ends.

An incomplete lead cloth seal of Post-Medieval date, AD c.1500-1800. The remains of this seal weigh 3.56g and seem to consist of part of one disc and the flattened integral rivet. The surviving incomplete disc (probably disc one Egan,G. p.2). has a diameter of 21.0mm and thickness of 1.2mm. The external surface is smooth and plain with the exception of thin incised linear markings that appear to be letters, incorporating a capital 'M' with line across the base. Rotated 90 degrees clockwise the capital 'M' might also be described as a flag on a flagpole, rectangular in s…

A sub-spherical lead artefact, probably an unfinished musket ball. This spherical item has a diameter of 10.7mm and, with a thin layer of dried mud covering much of the surface, weighs 7.43g. A seemingly integral protrusion immerges from the side of the sphere. This sub-circular to sub-oval protrusion has a maximum diameter of 4.6mm adjacent to the main sphere and extends out for a length of 2.7mm. The end of this protrusion flares out to an irregular shaped sub-oval measuring 5.3mm x 4.5mm. The terminal of this appendage slants diagonally and has an irregular shaped edge. The centre …

A small lead or lead-alloy artefact of uncertain function and date, probably Medieval to Modern. This object is probably or possibly incomplete but this is uncertain. The artefact has a weight of 1.14g and consists of a thin, 0.9mm, sub-oval lobe of white metal. This lobe has a width of 11.9mm and length of c.13.4mm. An integral sub-rectangular tab projects out from the lower edge, thus increasing the length to 17.6mm. Post medieval lead musket ball.
The artefact is spherical and has a diameter of 14.8mm and weights 18.52g.
The musket ball surface is generally smooth but is flattened on two diametrically opposite ends. On one end, the flattening is more pronounced allowing the ball to rest still on a flat surface. The opposite side shows more subtle flattening. These flattened areas may be the result of having been fired to a hard surface or can be the result of deformation. As lead is a relatively soft material, heavy lead artefacts can become misshaped under their own weight. For this reaso…

All have a casting seam visible around the centre. C) is smaller than the other two shot, and is also slightly flattened on one side. This ball has slightly more pronounced casting seam than the other two, however width of the casting seams are approximately the same.

A lead cloth seal of probable post-medieval date. The gap between discs one and two is a maximum of 0.8mm.

A thin lead disc of sub-circular or oval form in plan. This artefact is a uniface token of Post-Medieval date, c.AD1500-1850. The date is uncertain but Medieval to Post-Medieval is probably most likely. Weight is 1.1g, diameter is 15.17mm, thickness is 0.75mm. One suface of the disc has a single fleur de lis, in relief, at the centre. The fleur de lis is a Powell type 4. It seems as though the opposite surface is undecoarated but if it was once decorated it is now so worn that the design can no longer be identified.
