A complete copper alloy pipe tamper in the form of an upright hand grasping a cylindrical object with flared end (probably a scroll) The hand has long moulded fingers wrapped around the bar and a thumb and hollowed palm below. The bar flares to each end, terminanting in a flat, circular face. The ends of the bar are decorated, one end with a single circumferetnial groove, theopposite ned with two. A copper alloy sheet metal book clasp of Howsam type A.6.2. A catchplate originally paired with a hooked plate. A flared plate with a scalloped edge along the wider, distal end. An incomplete lead cloth seal. A two part seal with decoration on both discs. On one face is a central cross or privy mark flanked by possible letters and some symbols; a six pointed star on the bottom right. On the other face are further indistinct markings in a pellet border. Date: Post Medieval - c. 1500 - 1650 Dimensions: 18.15 mm x 2.61 mm Weight: 4.22 g This is similar to a number of items in Egan, G 1994 Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum, e.g. No. 208 (ibid p. 90 & p. 181 fig 30) which is dated to the 16th to early 17th centuries
