The tool is sub-cordate in form and has a trimmed butt (butt type b) in Butler, (2005:59), figure. 20, and rounded point (point type i). It is lenticular in cross-section and broadly symmetrical but one face has a raised, domed area on one side near the base. The handaxe has one straight long edge (edge type e) and one twisted in a reverse 'S' (edge type f). It has been bifacially worked with covering flak…

A small cordate flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-180,000 BC) and of Wymer (1999) Type J. The tool is bifacially worked from a reddish brown flint using soft hammer flaking. There is damage to the butt end and the distal tip has broken away, probably after deposition. The handaxe has lenticular cross section and the surface has a dark brown to orange patination typical of prolonged deposition in iron-rich Thames valley gravel terrace deposits.

The axehead has been worked on all sides with one region of thin pebble cortex being visible on one of the wide faces. This is a cream colour with occasional iron staining There are patches of cortex like cream coloured material on other faces which may be imperfections in the flint. The flint is mostly an off white colour with dark grey patches and occasional iron staining
The axe is triangular in plan with a rounded butt and well formed rounded point. It is broad…

A Lower Palaeolithic Acheulean bifaced flint hand axe dating c. 500000-190000 BC.
The axe is crudely triangular in form and planoconvex in profile and in cross-section. The point is narrower in thickness than the body, with the body increasing gradually in thickness along its length. The thickest section of the body is approximately halfway along its length, which is also the widest point. The body continues to increase in width but decrease in thickness after this point into the sub-rounded butt.
One face of the axe has been retouched more than the other wit…

Complete small cordate/ovate handaxe in fresh condition, of Wymer, J.J. (1999) type J/K, of lightly patinated brown/black flint with a few, grey coarse inclusions, the high points and edges to the ventral face have started to turn whitish, this is most notable to the butt (trimmed type b), the other (dorsal) face is largely unpatinated with just faint whisps of a lighter colour to the surface. All flake scars appear to be semi-soft hammer struck with the flake scars overlapping the centre line, effectively thinning the piece, the ventral face has a large, confidently struck removal, t…

Complete cordate Handaxe of Wymer, J.J. (1999) type J, of differentially patinated flint, one face (ventral) is largely patinated orange with light buff patches to the point and high points of the flake scars in that area, the base of the butt retains a darker band, almost dark grey, this is probably closer to the original colour of the flint. The other face (dorsal) is also orange and dark grey, but this is overlain by white mottles, getting more condensed close to the butt which has a large patch of whiteish thin, weathered and pock marked cortex extant, this is the only part of the…

In plan the object is broadly sub-triangular, with a flat butt and rounded tip. In section it is broadly lenticular in profile.
The dorsal face has three or four large flake removals with short stepped abrupt retouch down one side to the tip with more invasive stepped retouch on the opposing edge where the surface is rough and fractured. The ventral face has three large flake removals with extensive long, sub-parallel retouch on one lower side near to the butt and with a f…

A cordate lower to middle Palaeolithic flint handaxe, 87.9mm in length and dating to c. 500,000 - 180,000 BC. The tool is made from a pale grey brown flint which is now heavily patinated with a white patina from prolonged deposition in calcareous sediments. There are also patches of iron staining to the surface. The side profile and cross section are lenticular and the tool is bifacially worked, with removals covering both faces. The distal tip appears to have been damaged, possibly during use.

A Middle Palaeolithic Coygan ('Bout Coupe') handaxe. Cream/beige flint or chert. Sub-rectangular with a straight base, and narrows to a rounded tip (now incomplete). All edges have shattered damage. One face has a flat profile formed by three horizontal removal scars, the left-most with a further removal flake at 45 degrees to the edge. The other face has a raised profile with invasive, stepped or scaled, low angle retouch. An area of cortex remains at the base.

A Lower Palaeolithic sub-cordate handaxe. Bifacially worked with areas of cortex remaining on both surfaces. The 'ventral' face has invasive removal scars to the right and left of the pointed apex, and natural fracture lines at the butt. The 'dorsal' has invasive stepped removals along both sides, and a large natural fracture with loss of surface area at the butt, corresponding to the fracture line on the other face. Water worn. Orange/beige chert with small patches of recortication.
