An incomplete Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe of 'Crude' form (500000 BC-180000 BC). Wymer Type G. This implement has lost most of its original manufactured surface probably having been subjected to intense cold. As a result, most of the surface is uneven. In plan, it is pointed at the distal end and rounded at the proximal end. The dorsal face is humped and the ventral face is flatter. On the ventral face, at the proximal end, there is a patch of buff/off-white patina. This handaxe is grey and blends to off-white with reddish staining in places. Length: 119.61mm; width: 68…

An incomplete Acheulian flint handaxe of the Lower Palaeolithic period (c. 480,000 BP-c. 130,000 BP). The implement is sub-oval in plan and the tip is missing, apparently as a result of gellifraction. Some material has been lost on one face near the butt end. It also has a number of hair-line fractures. It has been knapped overall and the butt is evenly rounded in plan. There is an off-centre sub-circular perforation which is a natural feature formed by the crystallisation around a former fossil sponge. On one face there is a small circular void that was also formerly occupied by a …

A complete flint object, possibly a handaxe of Palaeolithic date. In plan, the implement is ovate in form and in side view it has a pointed oval profile. The extent of the removals on both faces is invasive and they are completely covered with an off-whit and buff cortex. At each side there is a characteristic S-shaped profile. 108.9 x 73.7 x 21.5. Weight: 189.04g. This object has been tentatively identified as a handaxe. However, it may have been formed naturally.

An almost complete “sub-cordate” flint handaxe of Palaeolithic date 500,000 BC – 40,000 BC). Length 148.5mm, width 79.2mm and 37.1mm thick. Weight 386.0g. Bi-facially worked and symmetrical in plan, the implement has a pointed tip and a rounded butt. The extreme point of the tip is missing due to an old break. The flake removals cover the whole of both faces. It is slightly "rolled", although this is hardly noticeable and the patination colour on both faces is generally off-white. This implement falls into Wymer's sub-cordate category: Type G (Wymer 1999, 10-11). This imp…

Incomplete bi-facially worked flint implement, probably a hand-axe of probable Palaeolithic date. Length 121mm, width 64mm and 41mm thick. Weight 219.39g. The black patinated implement has several small modern breaks along the edges and the tip of the point is also broken and missing. However, this break appears to be old. Viewed in plan, it tapers towards a sharp point from the thick angular butt. Prior to damage the edges would have had a slightly "twisted" appearance. The surfaces are slightly "rolled", probably due to the action of the sand and shingle environment in which it wa…
