Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall

Large flint flake worked into a side scraper, semi-circular in plan, lozenge-shaped in profile and triangular in section. The scraper has a denticulated edge that runs along the right side of the ventral face and around to the distal tip of the flake. The same edge on the dorsal face has been frost-fractured and damaged to appear like reworking, but has only been worked at the proximal end. Most of the dorsal face is still covered in cortex. The flint is a mottled light to dark grey colour and looks to have come from a nodule of flint, rather than a beach pebble, which may have been…

Chert flake, semi-circular in plan, rectangular in profile and section, which appears to be a struck piece but with no secondary working. There is a notch half way down the right margin of the ventral face, which may have been used as a graver, but may also be accidental. The profile of the flake suggests it may have been a core tablet or a core platform rejuvenation flake, as it has several straight sides which could the beginning of flakes taken off this original platform. The flake is very water worn so that it is difficult to identify the material (Rosemary Stewart pers comm). The…

Object type: CLEAVER
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint bifacial cleaver made on a Levallois flake with a U-shaped (Wymer Type H) form in plan, and a lozenge-shaped profile with a straight edge (Wymer Type e), dating from the Middle Palaeolithic period. The cleaver has a straight transverse cutting edge at the distal end opposite to the curved butt end (Wymer Type b) at the proximal end which has partly been removed by an invasive flake, perhaps to remove the natural fault in the flint which remains as a patch of white cortex. The cleaver edge has been formed by the removal of tranchet flakes from the right lateral edge of the ventra…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A chert blade and straight end scraper, trapezoidal in plan, rhomboidal in profile and triangular in section, dating from the Palaeolithic period, c.400,000-40,000 BP. The blade is 92 mm in length, 42.5 mm in width at the distal end tapering to 23 mm at the proximal end, 14.9 mm in thickness and 47.5 g in weight. There is the remnant of a pre-prepared striking platform at the proximal end with a distinct point and bulb of percussion at the edge of the ventral face; the force of the blow has resulted in a gently sinuous curve to the ventral face. The dorsal face bears the scars removal…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint bifacial ovate hand axe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic period, originally from the collection of Roy Rainbird Clarke (1914-1963). The hand axe belongs to the Acheulean tradition and is classified by Wymer (1999) as Mode 2, Type K on page 11, fig.4. Made on a large flint flake which has been worked by the removal of flakes around the circumference of the flake to produce a roughout, followed by thinning using a soft hammer to remove shallow flakes from both faces, removing all traces of the original flint cortex. The domed dorsal face has been finished by the removal of a s…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A ficron hand axe of the Acheulean tradition, dating from the Lower Palaeolithic period, originally from the collection of Roy Rainbird Clarke (1914-1963). In plan, the axe is triangular with concave sides, typical of the ficron style of hand axe (Wymer, Mode 2, Type M). Made on a flint nodule the flint has been flaked to remove most of the cortex, except for a large patch at the butt end, producing a tapering axe which is lozenge-shaped in section. The narrow tip has been finely flaked to a point. The surface of the flint is coated with a thick, silky patina which has become a deep o…

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Lower Palaeolithic unifacial flint handaxe dating from the Acheulean period (400,000 to 160,000 years BP). The handaxe is pointed in plan and plano-convex in profile and in section (Wymer type F); it is 128.5 mm in length, 77.5 mm in width, 43.5 mm in thickness and 332.15 g in weight. The handaxe was made on a flake removed from a large beach cobble. The point of percussion is visible at the proximal butt end. The ventral face has been trimmed flat by the removal of several shallow flakes from the right margin. There is an oval inclusion, as part of a fault, of coarse cortical mater…
