A complete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date. Jason Gibbons (pers. com.) comments that this is 'a Wymer (1999) Type G handaxe of sub-cordate form. All flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck, the blank for this piece was a flat nodule of flint a little larger than the finished handaxe, this is evidenced by patches of water-worn cortex extant to both faces. The dark grey flint with paler inclusions has patinated a mottled orange colour from exposure to glacial sands and gravels and the iron oxides within. The edges and the high points to the flake scars are lightly rolled,…

Lithic implement described as 'a small, incomplete Acheulean handaxe dating to the Lower Paleolithic. Bifacially worked on a tertiary flake. The axe appears to have been roughly heart-shaped originally, with a rounded butt, curving inwards slightly, and a slightly pointed tip at the opposite end. A curved section is missing from one side of the tip. This appears to have occured following deposition as the edges of the break are still sharp. Both faces are largely covered with flaking scars. There is further finer, but irregular, retouch to some of the edges. Both faces have become smo…

An complete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). It is relatively small in size, sub-cordate in shape and pointed oval in cross-section. There is extensive working with a semi-hard hammer, but leaving a small part of the original surfaces of the blank visible in the centre of each face. The edges are slightly abraded or 'rolled'. There is only slight patination and a small amount of orange staining in places.

A retouched flint flake of probable lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). Jason Gibbons (pers. com.) comments that this is a 'flat, tabular nodule of black flint with thin, weathered greyish cortex extant to most of the surfaces on both faces. Minimal and irregular flakes have been removed from the edges, a concentration of flake removals is noted to one long edge, forming a chopping or cutting edge.' Reinspection suggests that this cutting edge has been intentionally formed.

A complete flint lower paleolithic handaxe. It is crudely pointed in shape and has been created on a cobble with part of the cortex remaining on both faces. Bifacially worked using a hard hammer. The flint is an opaque mottled grey colour with a shiny patina. The edges are abraded or 'rolled' as is to be expected given its coastal findspot.

An complete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). Jason Gibbons (pers. com.) comments:
'small sub-cordate handaxe of Wymer(1999) Type E/G/J, in very slightly rolled condition with only a small amount of edge loss (apart from part of the point is missing) and abrasion to the high points to the flake scars. All flakes appear to be semi-hard hammer struck, and all surfaces have been modified with overlapping flake scars with no trace of the original “blank” visible, however It is likely that the blank was either a large primary flake or a thermal (frost) …

A complete flint handaxe or core tool of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). Jason Gibbons (pers. com.) comments:
'small ovate handaxe of Wymer (1999) Type E/K, of almost circular planform. In very fresh condition and apparently unpatinated black glossy flint, all flakes are semi-soft hammer struck and overlap, passing over the centreline with only a few terminating in a slight hinge, the flake scars are confidently struck and no trace of the original “blank” are visible, all surfaces have been modified. An ?incomplete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). Jason GFibbons (pers. com.) comments 'elongated ovate handaxe, possibly of Wymer (1999) Type K, of rather thick section, in rolled condition and patinated orange with dark mottles from exposure to iron oxides from deposition in glacial sands and gravels, recent edge damage shows the original colour of the flint as being black/grey. All flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck, a small area of orange patinated cortex is retained to one side of the butt and towards the point on one side.'

An ?incomplete flint crude handaxe or core tool of probable lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). It is crudely sub-cordate in shape and sub-oval in cross-section. It reaches a blunt point at one end, the tip of which may be incomplete. Bifacially flaked using a soft hammer with patches of finer working in places around the sides. A large chunk is missing to one side of the butt end with patches of fine retouch around this on one face suggesting that this may represent post-production damage. A complete flint flake of lower Paleolithic date. Jason Gibbons (Norfolk Historic Environment Service, pers. com.) writes: 'Hard hammer struck flake found in situ at Happisburgh site 1, partially imbedded in laminated silts with only the platform and bulb protruding. The flint is glossy black and in exceptionally fresh condition with edges still sharp, the platform retains a small amount of thin, weathered cortex to one side, the other side has two flake scars and the blow to remove this flake from the core falls on the larger of the two, essentially the platform has had the cortex re…

A complete flint handaxe. The axe is essentially sub-cordate in form, but its shape is distorted by an angular projection to one side of the butt end. It has been struck on a thermal fractured flake from a larger nodule. The edges and ridges on both faces are fairly abraded or 'rolled'. A small amount of cortex remains on the ventral face and slightly more in patches on the dorsal face. There is differential patination on each face with a mottled light brown, orange stained patina covering the dorsal face, but only extending across c.40 % of the ventral face leaving the dark brown col…

A complete flint paleolithic core/chopper. Jason Gibbons comments that this 'appears to have been made from a small cobble or frost (thermal) fractured piece of black flint, now patinated bright orange and quite heavily rolled, there are small areas of recent damage to the edges showing the original colour. Both faces have had centripetal hard hammer flake removals, except where angles would be too abrupt for a successful flake to be struck, on one face the flakes overlap in the middle, the other retains cortex either side. It is uncertain if this is a bifacial chopper-core (Wymer's T…

A complete flint lower to middle paleolithic cordate handaxe. It is leaf-shaped and roughly planoconvex in cross-section. Both faces are covered with shallow, invasive flaking and there are further patches of sub-parallel, long, low angle retouch along the edges on both faces. The flint is dark brown in colour with a glossy patina and there are patches of a hard silty deposit on one face. It survives in remarkably fine condition with fairly sharp edges and minimal damage.
