A complete flint lower Paleolithic handaxe. It is cordate shaped and bifacially worked, but with a small section of cortex remaining in the centre of one face. There is heavy iron staining on all surfaces and the edges are rolled.  Found along the north Suffolk coast on the edge of the Pakefield to Kessingland outcrop of forest bed material (see Robins et al. 2008).  Length: 73.96mm, width: 56.27mm, thickness: 24.28mm, weight: 150g

The flint is dark grey-brown in colour with light speckled patination that is heavier on the face with the cortex. A complete flint lower Paleolithic handaxe likely to date to around 600,000 BC. Sub-cordate shape (Wymer (1999) Type E/D) with retouch mainly confined to the edges of both faces. There is a large patch of pebble cortex remaining in the centre of one face. The edges and surfaces are heavily abraded.  Found along the north Suffolk coast on the edge of the Pakefield to Kessingland outcrop of forest bed material (see Robins et al. 2008).  Length: 121.53mm, width: 91.76mm, thickness: 29.11mm, weight: 340g

An incomplete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). It is relatively small in size, sub-cordate in shape and pointed oval in cross-section. There is extensive working with a semi-hard hammer on both faces leaving none of the original surfaces of the blank visible. The edges are heavily abraded or 'rolled' and there is a small section missing to one side of the rounded end. Both surfaces are heavily patinated, but the internal dark grey flint is visible in places around the edges due to damage. There is orange iron staining on the high points of the flake scars …

An ?incomplete flint crude handaxe or core tool of probable lower Paleolithic date (500,000-150,000 BC). It is crudely sub-cordate in shape and sub-oval in cross-section. It reaches a blunt point at one end, the tip of which may be incomplete. Bifacially flaked using a soft hammer with patches of finer working in places around the sides. A large chunk is missing to one side of the butt end with patches of fine retouch around this on one face suggesting that this may represent post-production damage. A complete flint lower paleolithic handaxe. It is crudely pointed in shape and has been created on a cobble with part of the cortex remaining on both faces. Bifacially worked using a hard hammer. A complete flint lower to middle paleolithic cordate handaxe. It is leaf-shaped and roughly planoconvex in cross-section. Both faces are covered with shallow, invasive flaking and there are further patches of sub-parallel, long, low angle retouch along the edges on both faces. The flint is dark brown in colour with a glossy patina and there are patches of a hard silty deposit on one face. It survives in remarkably fine condition with fairly sharp edges and minimal damage. A ?complete flint implement of probable palaeolithic date. It is large, roughly oval in shape and triangular in cross-section. Cortex still covers part of the dorsal face. There is a lot of damage around all sides of the butt end and the bulb of percussion is not visible. There are a few long, thin flaking scars at the distal end of the dorsal face and a small amount of irregular retouch around this edge, but this is crude and as such the object is difficult to classify as a formal tool type. All faces are covered in an orange patina as a probable result of deposition in river gravels…

A ?complete flint implement of probable palaeolithic date. It is a large natural flake, roughly triangular in shape, but there appears to be a some irregular, short, abrupt retouch along two of the sides. This is very crude and as such the object is difficult to classify as a formal tool type. The majority of both faces is covered in an orange patina as a probable result of deposition in river gravels, suggesting a palaeolithic date, but one end has a milky grey patina probably from where it was in contact with a different type of deposit.
