Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A bifacially worked flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic date. It is struck from a dark grey/brown flint, pointed in form with rounded butt end, and pointed oval in cross-section. Both faces have extensive and thick mottled pale brown patination, with small areas of cortex remaining at the butt end of the dorsal(?) face and centre of the ventral(?) face. The object is bifacially worked with covering, low angled flake removal. More recent damage has resulted in exposure of the unpatinated flint, particularly around the edges and especially at the butt end where a large recent flake has …

A worked flint implement of uncertain form, possibly a fabricator or similar item, and perhaps of Mesolithic or earlier date. It is struck from a grey/brown flint that has dark red to brown patination on most surfaces, one face (ventral face?) preserving a heavily stained red/brown cortex. The object is roughly triangular in plan and cross-section, tapering to an elongated rod with blunt end that is sub-circular in cross-section. A partially patinated flint blade, reworked to produce a point, of possible final Upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic date. It is struck from a grey/brown flint with blue-grey patination, small striking platform and bulb of percussion. The blade is triangular in cross-section with parallel blade scars on the dorsal face, and snapped at the distal end. At the distal end there are two areas of abrupt and parallel unpatinated retouch, one towards the centre, and one at the tip of an elongated point. The point does not appear to be deliberately formed, but rather as a result of the blade sna…

At a later date the object appears to have been re-used resulting in the opposite face being removed and revealing the unpatinated dark grey flint at the core of the object, with relatively neat edge retouch along one side and some possibly flake removal at one end (distal end?). The entire object measures 119.85mm in length, 93.68mm in width, 30.31mm in thickness and 406g in weight.

County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Published
An abraded and rolled flint handaxe of probable Lower Palaeolithic date. It is oval in form, pointed oval in section, struck from a grey flint with grey/white patination and some orange/brown iron staining, retaining a small amount of cortex at the striking platform. The surfaces have bifacial flake removal and very abraded edges resultant from post-depositional damage and glacial rolling. It measures 81.93mm in length, 72.81mm in width, 26.97mm in thickness and 197.88g in weight. this handaxe is of Lower Palaeolithic date, c.500,000-40,000 BC.

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A large flint blade core of possible Upper Palaeolithic or Mesolithic date. It is struck from a mottled dark brown flint that has had the exterior surfaces removed from all faces with the exception of traces of cortex on one side. It is now roughly square in section and rectangular in form, tapering towards one end. The core has two opposed striking platforms and one face has multiple long blade scars. It measures 132.61mm in length, 70.52mm in width, 70.66mm in thickness, and weighs 859g. This is a large blade core of probable Upper Palaeolithic to early Mesolithic date, c.80,000-6.500 BC.

A flint laurel leaf blade, probably of Neolithic, or possibly earlier, date. It is struck from a grey/brown flint that has a mottled orange/white patina. The object is ovoid in form, biconvex in section and bifacially worked, narrowing at one end but seemingly complete. Both faces have shallow but well controlled retouch formed from relatively large, shallow flakes with limited edge retouch at both ends and in areas of the sides/edges. It measures 133.48mm in length, 58.99mm in width, 14.10mm in thickness, and weighs 119.52g.

The butt end of an ovate or pointed hand-axe of Lower Palaeolithic date. The flint is dark grey in colour and has deep medium brown coloured staining on the surfaces and on the breaks, suggesting that the breaks are ancient. It has fine, shallow bifacial flaking on all surfaces leaving just three small areas of cortex visible. There is little evidence of rolling and no evidence of ploughmarks suggesting recent disturbance. The axe measures 96.31mm in length, 79.55mm in width, 30.35mm in thickness, and weighs 221.86g. This fragment is of Lower Palaeolithic date from between c.700,000 an…
